When so made the hose will be completely wound about the drum without passing over any portion of the hose with the device as the hose alignment is traversed in the reeling operation. The central shaft 13 also extends through gusset plates 141-, secured to the side frames 1 and 2. Each of the gusset plates has a slot 15 disposed therein into which the shaft 13 extends and is slidably and rotatably disposed therein. Disposed about the shaft 13 and adjacent either end thereof are wheels 16. The wheels 16 are in registerable alignment with the wheels 7. The wheels 16 are iXedly secured to the side wall members of the reel. The slot 15 has a return 1'? disposed therein and when the shaft 13 is placed within the return 17, the wheels 16 are out of engagement` with the wheels 7, the rcel is held against rotation in either direct-ion, but when the shaft 18 is placed wi thin the slot 15, the engagement of the wheels 16 are. permitted with the wheels 7 and the total weight of the hose reel and the hose is disposed'upon the wheels 16 and the wheels 7. The contacting of the wheel 7 with the supporting medium and the movement of the same across the supporting medium, rotates the wheel 7 and in turn drives the wheel 16 thereby rotating the hose reel. 1f the hose is to be unwound from the hose reel, the device is transported to the farthest point which the sprinkler nozzle head 1S, is to be 1 used, is released from the locking bracket 19 and the return of the device to the source of supply of the water, unwinds the hose from the reel, so that the water connection may be made. After the sprinkling operation has been completed, the hose may be wound upon the reel by the passing of the hose for at least one turn about the reel and then retracing the hose with the device thereby automatically reeling the hose upon the reel.

The primary purpose in making the side walls of the hose reel of two rectangular members, as illustrated in Fig. 4, is to form a locking notch between the corners of the side wall members 20 and 21, so that the shaft 13 may be made to engage the return slot 17; in so doing the corners 20 and 21 of the side wall members of the reel are made to engage between the spreader bar 5, thereby preventing the rotation of the reel, and at the same time raising the driven wheel 16 free and clear from the driving wheel 7. A supporting bracket 22 is disposed and outwardly eX- tends from the side frames 1 and 2 that acts as a support for the assembled device. The bracket 22 maintains the device in an upright position, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The lower ends 23 of the side frame members 1 and 2 act as supporting members in conjuction with the bracket 22 to maintain the assembled device in a relatively upright position.

While the form of mechanism herein shown and described is admirably adapted to fulfill the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to confine the invention to the one form of embodiment herein shown and described, as it is susceptible of embodiment in various forms, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.

What I claim is:

1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a pair o-f frame members, spreader bars disposed between the frame members and secured thereto, gusset plates secured to the lower ends of the frame members, said plates having hook shaped slots, stub shafts, supporting Wheels disposed upon the stub shafts adjacent the lower ends of the frame members, a central shaft rotatably and slidably disposed between the frame members within the slots disposed within the gusset plates, a hose reel secured to the central shaft, said reel having pairs of end members to form V-shaped indentations which act as brakes when the central shaft is placed within the return of the slots and mounting wheels secured to the side of the hose reel in registerable alignment with the supporting wheels disposed adjacent the lower ends of the frame adapted to be placed into and out of engagement with the supporting wheels.

2. In a device of the class described, the combination of frame members mounting supporting wheels adjacent their lower ends, spreader bars disposed between the frame elements and secured thereto, gusset plates having slots therein disposed upon the frame elements, return slots terminating one end of the slots, a hose reel shaft disposed within the slots and adapted for rotation within the slots and for slidable movement within the slots, a hose reel having pairs of end members to form indentations within the peripheral edge of the side walls of the reel mounted on the hose reel shaft and 'adapted to hold the hose reel against rotation when the hose reel shaft is placed in the return of the slots by coming in contact with a spreader bar of the frame, and wheels mountedupon the hose reel shaft and secured to the side of the hose reel and in registerable alignment with the supporting wheels and adapted to being rotated by contact with the supporting wheels, substantially as shown and described.
