Description

June 16, 1931. c. J. DUNBAR LOOSE LEAF BINDER Filed June 8. 1929 IN V EN TOR.
Patented June 16, 1931 funirsn stares czrannns a. DUNBAR, or iranniaazoo. razor-risen, sssrenon re mi nnnnnn consona- TION, or CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA, A oonronarron or rows Loose LEAF BINDER "application filed June- 8; 1929.] Serial No. 369,302.
Loose leaf binders have been provided with clamping bars and detachable posts connecting the clamping bars in connect1on"w1th fixed backs. Such a Structure is exemplified in a patent heretofore granted to me, $51,709,843, dated Apr. 23, 1929' The present invention is designed to provide a binder which maybe expanded to take in additional leaves and in which there are leaf-holding devices detachable from the binder which permit of an expansion as the binder in expanded.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of a binder with one of the clamping bars detached and with the binder open and the parts detached.
Fig. 2 an enlarged view of a sheet-holding cross bar.
Fig. 3 a section through the clamping bars and binding elements along the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 a perspective view of one of the binding posts.
Fig. 5 a similar View showing a post of greater length providing for expansion.
- Fig. 6 a perspective view of the locking bar.
1 marks the clamping bars. These are made of sheet metal of hollow box form. They are provided with sockets 2 for receiving the leaf-holding posts 3. Studs t are arranged on the inner face of the outer walls of the clamping bars and these extend into sockets 5 in the ends of the posts. The posts have transverse locking slots 6 adjacent to their ends andloclring bar 7 is provided with key-hole slots each having a narrow portion 9 the edges of which are adapted to enter the slots 6 to loolrthe posts in place, and an enlarged opening 8 of sufficient size to receive one of the posts initially. The locking bar has a finger hold 10 at its end.
This locking means operates in the same manner as the patent above referred to. lVhen the locking bar is pressed inwardly bringing the openings 8 into register with the openings 2, the binding posts may be entered and then the looking bar is moved endwise bringing the edges of the narrow portions 9 of'the key-hole slots'into the slots, 6,
thus locking the posts for use.
Sheets llare provided with the usual perforations 12 through which the posts extend. It will he understood that the clampingbars are arranged at each side and that the posts aredetachable from either of the clamping bars and that the locking bars on both sides are, or may be, identical. A leaf-holding device is provided. As shown, it comprises a cross-bar 13 with posts l l'extending into openings 14a in the leaves at one side ofthe binder said bar having openings '15 through'which'the posts 3e);-
tend. The post 14: may be extensible by pro viding the post witha screw-threaded socket 16. and sections 17 having screw-threaded ex tensions 18may be secured on the post, each extension having in turn a screw-threadet'l' socket 19 to which anothersection may be added.
A site side of the binder. It is; provided with posts 21 which extend into openings 22 in the leaves. This bar 20 has openings 23 through which the posts 3 extend. It will be noted that the postsil land 21' overlap and that this is conveniently accomplished by oifsetting the posts, using separate holes for each post. equal to the initial thickness of the leaf-hold ingdevice. It will be understood that the posts 21 have extending sections 17 similar to the extensions 17 on the posts 14.
In usethe posts 3 may bedetached from the clamping bar at one side of the binder, I
the binder laid open; as shown in Fig. 1, the leaf body lifted through the engagement of similar bar 20 is arranged at the oppo- This permits of an expansion w the cross bars 13 and 20, and taken to the usual rack for use in the usualmanner. An I extensible back'241 is secured to one ofthe clamping bars and extends into a pocket 25' 1. In a loose-leaf binder, the combination '7 of clamping bars; leaf-holding posts; means for detachably securing said leaf-holding osts to the clamping bars to permit of post substitution for expansion; and a sheet-holding mechanism comprising a cross-bar at each side of the binder detachable with the leaf body from the binder, said bars having overlapping posts engaging the leaf body.
2. In a loose-leaf hinder, the combination of clamping bars; leaf-holding posts; means for detachably securing said leaf holding posts to the clamping bars to permit of post substitution for expansion; and a sheet-holding mechanism comprising a cross-bar at each side of the binder detachable with the leaf body from the binder, said bars having overlapping posts engaging the leaf body, said cross-bars having openings through which the clamping posts extend.
3. In a loose leaf binder, the combination of clamping bars; leaf-holding posts; means for detachably securing said leaf-holding posts to the clamping bars to permit of post substitution for expansion; and a sheet-holding mechanism comprising a cross-bar at each side of the binder detachable with the leaf body from the binder, said bars having overlapping posts engaging the leaf body, said overlapping posts being extensible.
4. In a loose-leaf binder, the combination of clamping bars; leaf-holding post members; means securing said members to said clamping bars so as to be detachable from one of said clamping bars; and a sheet-holding mechanism comprising a cross-bar at each side of the binder detachable from the binder with the leaf body, said cross-bars having overlapping posts entering the leaf body.
5. In a loose-leaf binder, the combination of clamping bars; leaf-holding post members; means securing said members to said clamping bars so as to be detachable from one of said clamping bars; and a sheet-holding mechanism comprising a cross-bar at each side of the binder detachable from the binder with the leaf body, said cross-bars having overlapping posts entering the leaf body, said cross-bars having openings through which the clamping bar posts extend.
6. In a loose leaf hinder, the combination of clamping bars; leaf-holding post members; means for detachably securing said post members to the clamping bars to permit of post substitutions for expansion; and a sheet.- holding device comprising a cross-bar adapt ed to be placed between a clamping bar and a leaf body having post members thereon adapted to be extended to correspond with substitutions of post members on the clamping bars.
7. In a loose leaf binder, the combination of clamping bars; loose leaf post members; means detachably securing said post members to the clamping bars to permit of post substitution for expansion; and a sheet-holding device adapted to be impaled on said post members between a clamping bar and a leaf body and removable from the clamping bars with the included sheets, comprising an expanding post mechanism adapted to be extended to correspond with substitutions of post members on the clamping bars,
8. In a loose leaf hinder, the combination of clamping bars; loose leaf post members; means for detachably securing said post members to the clamping bars to permit of post substitution for expansion; and a sheet-holding crevice adapted to be impaled on said post members between clamping bar and a leaf body and removable from the clamping bars with the included sheets, comprising a crossbar and expanding post mechanism thereon adapted to be extended to correspond with substitutions of post members on the clamping bars.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
