The present invention relates `generally to ribbon-feeding mechanism of typewriting machines, vand more particularly to means for automatically reversing the ribbon-feed of Aa portable typewriting machine.

YIn carrying out my inventionY in an Underwood portable typewriter, the keys are operlative'ly connected to the usual ribbon-feed- -reversing mechanism when the ribbon reaches a vpredetermined point. A pivoted carrierlmember associated with each spool is operatively connected to a usual oscillating lever, which operates a drive-pawl for rotating a 1.. coaxial ratchet-wheel fastened to the spool.
A normally-ineffective actuator-lever is pivoted on each oscillating carrier, and the lever associated with l,the feeding spool is movable to a position by the ribbon, wherein it lis effective upon the next oscillation of the carrier to rotate a cam, whichwill connect the associated ratchet-wheel and its released pavvl. The lever is -moved to effective position by a lever-system which is operated by the ribbon when-the latter has bee-nsubstantially unwound fromthefeeding spoolI The .next depression of a key reverses theribbonfeed mechanism, because the two pawl-controlling cams are connected as usual,so that when the pawls of one spool are made effective for rotating the spool ahead, the pawls ofthe other spool are disabled to permit that .spool to be reversely rotated for unwinding the ribbon therefrom. ,K c
It is another feature of the invention to assemble, as a unit, the ribbon-control mechanism .and the key-operated mechanism for .each spool on a single bracket which is easily .mounted on the usual shift-frame.

Upon depression of a key 10 the platencarriage is letter-spaced from right to left by usual instrumentalities, not shown, and the lever 11 associated with the key Vis swung downwardly against a universal bar 26, which is disposed a short distance below the lever and is mounted for oscillation on a rockshaft 27. The lever is normally urged upward against a stop-pin 29 by a-contractile spring 28.

The ratchet-wheel 50 and the' pawls 60 and Y are oppositely disposed, and it is necessary to hold the pawls of one spool in ineffective positions while the ribbon is being un-V wound from the spool associated with the ineffective pawls. To -.this=end, each cam-plate 48 has two radial arm-members 70 and 7l arranged with cam-edges 7 2 .effective upon rotation of the `cam-plate for camming kthe pawls and 65, respectively, awayfrom the ratchet-wheel associated with -the screw from which the'ribbon iszbeing wound. The upper end-portion `of each upright member of the Usshaped link is bent Iat a right angle rearwardly and then downwardly. Each downwardly-bent end portion 75V of the link engages loosely in a vertical hole in Athe forward end ofthe adjacent arm 73. This construction permits .a horizontal base-.portion 76 of the link 74 to be `dispose-d Vbeneath the forward ends of the type-bar 14.
To the end that .the feed of the ribbon 3l may be manually lreversed at will, an upwardly-extending lever 77 is pivoted on a screw 7 8 aga-inst the inner face of a front plate 8O and adjacent 4`the right side of the l machine. The lever is bent forwardly at A8l for passing through a slot 82 `inthe front plate, .and is bent upwardly again at`83 to .have its upper portion compactly.disposed against the forward faceof the frontplate, the lever terminating in aball 84. , The pin 102 is fastened inthe carrier-body portion 104 a short distance below its pivotscrew 105 (FiguresV 1 and3). `-Therefore, each time the lever 53, is swung. forward-by depression of a key 10, the actuator-carrier 103 isrocked counter'clockwise about its pivot-screw. An actuator-member in the form of a thrust-lever'111, for moving the revers'- ing cam-plate 48, is pivotally monntedon a screw 112 in a rightwardly-extending integral flange-member 113 `of thefbody-portion 104, and extends upwardly toward the cam-plate. To provide an operative connection `between the. cam-plate 48 and the thrust-lever 111V the cam-arm 70 has an integral abutment lug 119 depending from its inner edge. The lug 119 terminates preferably one-fourth inch or more below the top of the lever 111,

Thelength of the circular arc ofthe slot 120 exceeds the angular movement of the cam-plate 48 plus that of the arm V49, since at certain times the cam-plate 48 may be moving in the opposite direction to the arm 49. tor-lever. 111 into positionfor engaging the depending lug119, a Z-shaped transfer lever 121 is pivoted about a screw '122 in an 'upwardly-spaced, rightwardlyfextending, 'integral ange 123 of the bracket-arm extension G. An arin 124 of the lever 121 extends rearwardly adjacent the right side of the lever 94, and has a depending member 125. Since the last-named lever is swung to the left bymovernent of t-he ribbon 31, an integral U-shaped hook 126 is provided onthe lever 94 and extends in a substantially horizontal plane to the rear, past the member 125, then tothe rightpast said member, and then forward past said member again (Figure 3).
`Another arm .127 of the lever 121 extends forward slightly past thelever. 111, and is normally disposed adjacent the left side of its upper end portion (Figure2). When most of the ribbon 31 is unwound from the right-hand spool the button 90 will ymove 'up' against the lever 94, andV at each typestroke thereafter will swing it to the left away from the cup. The arm 127 of the transfer lever 121 is swung to the right andr car- 1.
ries withitlthe lever 111 which is being oscillateditoward the rear at each type-stroke. The ripper end of the lever 111'is thus moved over tof'the right until its path to the rear will intersect the lug 119. Thereupon the next operation of a key 10 causes the lever 4111 to engage the lug 1,19and thrust it rear-` wardly, and swing the arms and 71 clockwise out of engagementwith pawls 60 and 65,'frespcctively', and their respective return springs will swing them into engagement with the right-hand ratchet-wheel 50.
As will be understood from the above explanation ofthe operative connection between thecam-plates' 48 of the right-hand and lefthand ribbon-spools, the pawls of the left-hand spool will bel disabled, i. e., made ineective c'oncoinitantly with the releasing of the pawls of the right-hand spool for effective engage ment with .their associated ratchet-wheel.
A detent-device'generally designated as130 is provided for holding the cam-plate 48 se- .curelyinits effective pawl-releasing position or in-its ineffective position clear ofthe pawls.
This `device includes a short extension 4131 of the plate on the oppositeside ofv its axis from the arms 70 and 71. The outer end of the ex'- tension 131 .is provided with two triangular V-shaped .notches`132- Aball 133 disposed in a` hole 134 the right-hand side plate 47 and pressed by a leaf-spring 135 fastened on the outer face of the side plate, is arranged to lisos-,505
the rear notch vwhen the cams are clear ofV the pawll (Figure 7.)- v n he engagement of the ball` in the notches will yieldingly hold the cani-plate from creeping out of either its effective or ineffective posi-tion, bui; will not pre'mrli-tthe` rotary movement of the cam-plate by the' abovedescribed reversing mechanism. It can also be seen by those skilledl in the art that the co-operation of the spring-pressed ball and the notches provides a further advantage by helping ina wellknown way to move the camplate ineither direction to the end of its travel after the tooth between the notches 182 passes the center of the ball. It will be noted that the detent-device 130 on theright-han'd cam-plate also controls the left-hand camplate through the above-described operative conection between the cam-plates.
The right-hand spool 40, having been made effective for winding up the ribbon 3l, the button 90 will then move toward-the core 91 of the right-hand spool at each type-stroke, and the trip-lever 94 is caused to follow the button closely by a contractile s'pring'137, which has one end fastened to a rightwardlybent integral lug 138 on the lever 94 (Figure 3), and the other'end fastened to a lug139, which is integrally joined to the top edge of the'y bracket-arm 107 adjacent the left end thereof and' eXtendstherefromrto the right, being bent forward enough to bring the line for yforce of the spring 137 nearly parallelto the line of movement of the trip-lever 94. This prevents binding of the lever 94 about its pivot, and makes for easier operation ofthe lever and the actuator-controlling mech'alnism. n
It will be seen upon inspection of Figure 1 that a key-lever 11 Vdoes not strike the universali bar 26 atthe beginning of the down stroke, and" thereforedoes not instantly begin to move the mechanism provided for operating the cams 48.
Y It will be further noted that the top ofthe lever 111 isnormally spaced'a short distance forward froml the lug 119. Thus, when the Alever 11,1 engages the lug, the type-bar 14 associatedwithrthe depressed key 10 will havev already moved overv a large part of its travel toward the printing point, and will have acquired considerable momentum, which will be effectivetliroughf its connection to the lever 53 to help rotatethev cam-plate 48', and! thereby decrease the amount ofthe additional force required, for depressing the key 10, which has to both type the letter and -reversethe ribbonfeed. 1
Variationsmay be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used withoiit others.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a set of keys, a ribbon-spool rotatably supported on the machine, a paWland-ratchet mechanism associated With the spool to feed the ribbon, and a cam for controlling the operation of said feeding mechanism, of a device for setting the cam into effective and ineffective positions, including a pivoted oscillatable element actuated by each stroke of the keys, a lever between the oscillatable element and the keys for rocking the element through a greater angular amplitude than that of the lever, said element moving normally in ineifective positions for movably engaging said cam, and means op- `erable by the movement of said ribbon for moving the element into effective positions for moving the cam to control the ribbonfeed.
