Description

June 2, 1931. I, A. BAUM 1,808,490
CORNER CONNECTION FOR FRAMES Filed Oct. 14, 1929 Patented June 2, 1931 UNITED STATES 1,ss,49a
. AT NT {oF- c ISAAC A. BAUM, or CHICAGO; ILLINOIS comma CONNECTION non ams I Application filed October 14,1929. .serial'No. 399,620.
My invention relates to means for frammg door openmgs and partlcularly to a novel end connection.
An object of my invention is to provide a firm and rigid corner connection for intersecting door frame members, the connectlon device being 1n the form of a unit of angular outline, the two ends of which are stood by reference to the accompanyingdrawings, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of the end of a frame constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; I Fig. 3 is'an end elevation taken at right angles to that of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the connecting member for the two angle plates.
In the drawings, I have illustrated side and head frame members 10-11 of general- 0 ly channel shape in cross section. The margins of the flanges of the channel are laterally bent as at 12 and rebent at 13 to provide plaster terminals having an undercut portion. In each end of the frame memheld in place by suitable nails extending through the flanges of the channel.
Ears 1617 are struck out of the web of the respective channels and bent to lie in the plane of the side flanges of the channel.
This serves a triple purpose; first, it exposes the wood blocks 15 at the back of the channel to enable the attachment of a wood erecting block or brace; second, the ears provide means for laterally holding the frame relative to tile or other masonry of which the wall may be composed; and third, the
' ears provide means for engagement withthe connecting unit about to be described. This unit consists of a pair of L-shaped bers 10-11 I mount a wood block 1 l-15' plates 1819 of duplicate construction. The inside edges of the legs of each plate are bent laterally to provide flanges 20 adapted toslidably interfit with the undercut grooves formed in theplaster terminals. Each leg '55 of thean'gle plates is slit and the slitportions or tongues 21 are offset to the extent of the thickness of metal of the ears 16,'whereby the .inside portion of the legs may slide along and outside of the flanges of the channel, while the tongues 21 slide insid'e of the ears 16. V 'As a means for connectingthe two angle plates so that they may be handled as a unit,
I provide'the web member shown in Fig. 1
consisting of side Walls 22 -23 and end walls 2425, the latter being Welded to the inside faces of the angle plates;v The webs 22-23 are positioned to abut or be immediatelyadjacent to the ends of the wood blocks 14-15 [1'0 and nails 26 are driven 'through openings in the Webs. and into the said wood blocks.
This constitutes a sufficiently firmand rigid holding device for the partseven though the H frictionally holding engagement of the vari-- '75 "ous interfitting elements is-insufficient.
Obviously'the construction is capable of some modification and I do notwish to be limited except as indicated in the appended claims. I
I claim:
' 1.':In'c0mbination, side and head frame 1 members of generally ,channel' shape in cross section, wood blocks carried by the respective members near their ends, a pair of angle plates, -a Web joining and spacing the plates, means providing sliding interlocking engagementbetween the legsyof the angle plates and the respective frame mem bers, and fastening devices through the web into the wood blocks.
2. In combination, side and headframe members of generally channel shape is cross section, plaster terminals on the exterior of a flange, said terminals having undercut portions, a separate connectingunit consistingof two angle plates theinside edges of the legs of the plates having lateral flanges adapted to slidably interfit with the undercut portions of the plaster extending to 2 I '1,sos,490
terminals of the respective frame members, aweb for connecting the two angle plates, and means passing through the web for connecting the unit and the frame members.
5 3. In combination, side and head frame members of generally channel shape in' cross section, means providing ears project ing laterally from the frame members in the plane of the flanges thereof, and a frame I connecting unit consisting of a pair L-shaped plates, the legs of which are slit and the slit portions offset to slidingly interfit with the ears on the frame. c 4. In combination, side, and head frame 7 members of generally channel shape in cross a section, means providing ears projecting laterally from the frame members in, the plane of the flanges thereof, .a frame connecting unit consisting of a pair of L-shaped plates, the legs of which are slit andfthe slit portions offsetto slidingly interfit with theears on the frame, and means providing inierfitting flanges and grooves on said unit andframemembers, .7 i I 5..,In combination, side and head frame I members ofchannel shape in crossjsection, Y ears struck out of the webs of the side members at points near their ends, anda connecting unit comprising a pair of L- shaped 3O plates, each of the legs of'the plates being slitted.andtheslit portions offset to slidably interfit with the ears on the frame members. i
6. In combinatiomside and rhead frame ,35 members of channel shape in cross section,
ears struck out of the Webs of the side members at points near their ends, a connecting unit comprising apair of L-shaped'plates, each of the legs of the plates being slitt ed andthe slit portions offset to slidably inter- I Y if fit with the earson the frame members, and p means providing interfitting flanges and glOoves' on i said connecting plates and f mes.
Q5 7. In combination, channel frame .meinhers, ears struck out of the web of one of the said ,members' near its end, pair of L-shaped connecting; plates, the ,legs of 1 which are slit and the slit portions offset 7 to slidably interfit with the ears on said frame.member. Y r
