y This invention relates to a sharpening tool and has relation more particularly'to a device ofthis-kind especially designed and adapted for useV with'the spiral cutting blades of lawn mowers. Y f y It is an object of they invention to provide avdevice of this kind adapted to have used in connection therewith a iile or` kindred grinding element and wherein the device is provided with means to maintain the grinding element in effective position at all times with respect to the mower bladebeing sharpened.
The invention lconsists in the details of vconstruction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved sharpening tool whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advanta 'eous for use,
as will be hereinafter more ful y set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein :-k
Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a sharpening tool constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position, an associated grinding member and spiral blade being shown in fragment, the applied le being indicated by broken lines;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-.2 of Figure 1 with the applied file indicated by broken lines;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, my improved tool comprises an elongated plate P of desired dimensions and which has an intermediate portion cut out to provide an elongated and relatively wide opening 1. The resultant side members 2 delining the opening 1 are upwardly offset substantially from end to end to a position slightly above the adjacent face of the plate P proper. In the present embodiment of my inventionthe guide member 6 is the conventional rod comprised in lawn mower structures connecting` the wheel housings and which rod is disposed in parallelism with the axis of the rotating cutter. j j V i In practice, ,my improved'tool is engaged through the medium of the ears or clips 4 with'the guide member 6 with the blade B to be sharpened disposed between the select- ,ed arms 4. A file or kindred grinding element is placed upon the tool whereupon the ltooltogether with the applied grinding member is moved lengthwise of the guide member p 6 resulting in the desired' sharpening of the 'cuttingedge of the blade B, it being understood that as the tool is reciprocated back and forth upon the guide'member 6 the blade 'B will rock back and forth, thus assuring a most eifec'tivejcutting edge for the blade. l By providing a Yplurality of longitudinally spaced arms 4 a single tool can befconven- ,iently employed with different size lawn mowers and more particularly to compensate for'different' relative spacings between the guide member 6 and the rotating rcutting member.

As clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, thearms 5 have their free end portions offset beyond one` face of the side members 2 while the free end portions of the vlugs 8 are offset beyond the opposite faces of said members 2.
It is also believed to beapparent that `by provision of the arms 5 as herein described and illustrated my improved tool can be em's ployed with equal facility with either a right or left hand mower. i Y Frein the foregoing description Vit is tliolightto be obvious thatla sharpening tool constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with whieh it may be assembled and operated, and itfwill also be obviousthat my invention is susceptible of some change and'modification without departing'from the principles and spirit thereof ,and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangementand formation of V,the several parts herein shown in carrying ont'iny invention in practice except as hereI inafter claimed.
