The desk is also provided with the usual center drawer 5 which is mounted immediately beneath the top section 1 as clearly shown in Figs. l and 2 and which, as usual, extends throughout the central portion of the desk.
In the closing movement of the drawers the pawls will be depressed to compress the.
For operating the bars 7 and controlling the locking of the pedestal drawers, there is providedV a bell crank lever 15 pivoted to the desk frame as indicated at 16". @ne end ol' Athis lever 15 is pivotally connected at 17 to the upper end of the bar 7 the opening for the pivot pin in the bar being slightly enlargedto compensate for the movement thereof relative to the lever, while the opposite end of this lever is formed with a lateral extension 18 of inverted V-shaped section extending under the center drawer of the desk as shown in Figs. l and 2. This lateral extension 18 under the central portion or" the center drawer is provided witha plate member 19 for a purpose which will be hereafter described. In a desk haying pedestals at opposite ends the lockingmeans for the pedestal drawers as described above will be duplicated in each pedestal and the extension 18 will extend between the bell crank levers.
The center drawer is provided with the usual front wall 20 formed with an opening in the central portion rotatably receiving the handle member 21. This handle member has a flange 22 engaging the front face of the drawer and holding the member in the proper operative position. A lateral extension 23 forms a handle portion by which the member may be manually rotated to operate the locking mechanism. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5 this handle member is tubular in form and receives a locking cylinder 24, a suitable form of key operated cylinder lock, which controls and operates the locking bolt 25.
A supporting plate 26 has a central portion 27 formed with a substantially semi-cylindrical opening 28 in the lower portion thereof which permits the application of the plate member over the handle member as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The portion 27 of the supporting plate at one side of the opening 28 is formed with a recess 29 to receive the locking bolt 25 when the handle member is in drawer locking position so that it may be eectually locked against rotation to prevent the opening of the drawer except through the withdrawal of the locking bolt by the operation of the lock with a key. Offset portions 30 are connected to the ends of the central portion 27 and form part of the supporting plate. These offset portions are secured to the front wall 2O of the drawer as shown in Fig. 4 and are provided with lateral extensions 31 having terminal portions to which a retaining plate 32 is secured. The locking cylinder 24 at the rear end portion is provided with a flange 24 which engages against the rear end of the handle member 21'.
A locking member or cam 33 having a peripheral liange is secured to the iiange portion 24 of the locking cylinder by screws or the like 33, and is formed with a central opening in which one end of the retaining pin 34 is riveted. The opposite end of this retaining pin extends through an opening in the retaining plate 32 and receives the holding pin 35 in a transversely extending opening formed therein. This pin 35 engages the back side of the retaining plate 32 and retains the locking cylinder, handle member and locking cam in proper operative assembly in the desk drawer. The flange on the locking cam 33 terminates in close proximity with the front face of the retaining plate so that endwise movement of the handle member and the locking mechanism will be prevented. This retaining plate 32 is provided with an angle plate 32 which is adapted for cooperation with the locking cam to limit the rotative movement thereof by cooperation with the shoulder 33 shown in Fig. 5.
