My invention relates to a miter square, and the object of my invention is to provide such a device which is constructed in such a manner as to be particularly suitable for use by masons in the construction of masonry walls, buildings, and the like.
Another object of my invention is to provide a miter square with clamping members on one of the blades which are adapted to secure a masons level thereon, for the purpose of forming an extension therefor.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure l is a plan view of a miter square incorporating my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the reverse side of the miter square disclosed in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view of that disclosed in Figure 2, and being partly broken away for the purpose of showing the protector incorporated therein.
Figure 4 is a plan view similar to Figure 2 and showing the application of the square in gauging blocks of masonry to be cut at a given angle.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on substantially the line 5 5 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a sectional View taken on substantially the line 6-6 of Figure 3.
Figure 7 is a cross sectional View taken on the line 77 of Figure 5.
In the drawings, and for the purpose of illustration, I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention which comprises a miter square having blades 5 and 6 which are graduated on both sides thereof in a similar manner. The blade 6 is provided with a cylindrical stud 7, which is provided with a threaded portion 8 as shown in Figure 6.
The stud 7 is provided with grooves 9 and shoulders 10 on which a lock washer 11 is adapted to seat for the purpose of holding down on the conical portion 12 of the blade 5 for holding the same in position and from rotation with respect to the blade 6. A knurled nut 13 has threaded engagement O with t-he portion 8 of the stud 7 and is pro vided with a cylindrical recess 14, in which a spring 15 is positioned for bearing down upon the washer 16 for holding the same in engagement withl the lock washer 11.` The nut 13 also engages the washer 16 as at 17, when the nut is Vtightened down upon the spring, and 4whereby the blades 5 and 6 are rigidly secured together.
The blade 6 is provided with a protractor 18, which may bc seen through the rectangular opening 19 in the blade 5. A sloping portion 20 of the blade 5 adjacent the opening 19 is provided with an indicator mark 21, which indicates the angle which the blades 5 and 6 make with each other in any adjusted position, by `means of its cooperation with the protractor scale 18.
On one side of the blade 6, are opposed guideways 22, having formed therebetween a dovetailed channel 23, in which is adapted to slide a similarly dove tailed portion 24 of a U-shaped clamping member 25. The clamping member 25 embraces the blade 6 and a masons level 26 which is secured in position by means of a wing bolt 27 passing through one portion of the clamp 25 and engaging with the level as shown in Figure 5. The level 26 may be of any usual construe` tion, but is normally a` masons level which is substantially 4 feet long, and provides an extension for the square, in order that the same may be used for plumbing purposes and for gauging the desired angle for each side of a window arch and similar purposes.
It will be readily understood that my invention may be used for many kindred purposes as set forth, together with the purpose of gauging a masonry block 2S as shown in Figure 4, so that it may be cutor broken at a predetermined angle. It will also be apparent to those skilled in the art, that my invention is capable of certain variations without departing from the spirit of the invention and I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction heroin illustrated and described, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
