Description
S. WARZOHA FLAG DISPLAY DEVICE May 5, 1931.
Filed Oct. 16, 1930 gwoentoo Stephen u arzafia;
Patented May 5, 1931 UNIT ; r'rs 1' OFFICE FLAG- DISPLAY DEVICE Application filed October 16, 1930. Serial No. 489,143.
This invention relates to improvements in means for displaying flags.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a means whereby a flag 5 may be encased so that it will be protected from the elements, while at the same time being clearly exposed to view so that it will appear as being an unenclosed flag standing out in the breeze from the support to which 1 it is attached.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved means for maintaining the various parts of the present structure in assembled relation and for attaching the same i to a supporting staff whereby the flag will be permitted to rotate freely thereabout under the control of the breeze.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any I strict conformity with the showing of the drawings but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure l is a view in side elevation of the device embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 indicates a staff upon which the present flag is shown as being mounted, the flag and the casing structure therefor being indicated generally by the numeral 2.
The casing in which the flag is mounted comprises a pair of sheets 3 of a transparent material such, for example, as celluloid. These sheets may be pressed into any desired shape as, for example, they may be given a wavy formation so that in the completed structure the flag appearing therethrough will have the appearance of Waving. The body of the flag is indicated by the numeral 4 and, as shown, this is tightly compressed between the transparent sheets 3 which are i of the same dimensions as the flag.
The transparent sheets 3 are held together by an edging strip 5 which is of metal, preferably of aluminum. This strip, as shown, is substantially U-shaped in cross-sectional design so that the edges of the sheet and of the flag therebetween will be covered and also a portion of the outer face of each sheet adjacent its edges.
At the rear portion of the flag encasing frame structure the upper and lower longitudinal edges of the binding or edging'material 5 has attached thereto the swivel straps 6, each of which surrounds the staff 1 in the manner shown and. is suitably held against movement downwardly thereon, as indicated at 7, so that the flag and the transparent frame in which it is encased may swing freely about the staff under the influence of the breeze.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that by the present invention I provide a means-whereby a flag may be displayed out of doors and allowed to remain without suffering damage from the elements. At the same time, it may be clearly seen from all sides and due to the formation of the frame in which it is encased and the fact that it is mounted to swing with the breeze it will always have the appearance of waving.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising an elongated longitudinally undulated casing designed to conform in contour to a flag and adapted to have a flag compressed between side walls thereof, said side walls being of a transparent material, a supporting staff, and means for attaching the casing to said staff.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a casing having transparent side walls, said side walls being of the general contour of a flag and adapted to have the same compressed therebetween, an edging or a flag compressed therebetween, a metal bincL ing surrounding the edges of said sheets, a supporting stafl, and swivel straps carried by said binding at one end of the device and engaging about said stafi for swingingly attaching the device thereto.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
STEPHEN WARZOHA.
