IMPROVEMENT IN CQMBlNED BLOTTERS, RULERS, AND PAPER-CUTTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,362, dated July 25, 1876; application filed May 26, 1876.

To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THORNTON L. MONT- GOMERY, of Little Rock, in the county ot' Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oomence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The nature OI" my invention consists in the constructiouand arrangement ot' a combined blotter, ruler, and paper-cutter, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

1n the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a transverse crosssection on line a; m, Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a central vertical section on line y y, Fig. l.

A represents a rectangular sheet-metal plate of any suitable dimensions, formed'with side anges B and O, extending upward at right angles, as shown, and then bent outward again. The edge of the tlange B is left sharp,

to form a paper-cutter, while the edgeof the flange C is doubled to form a ruler, and the outer side of said liange C is graduated and marked with inches and divisions thereof.

rIhe lianges B and' O extend a suitable 'distance beyond both ends ot' the plate A, and at one end they are connected by a handlepiece, D, having a hole, a, for convenience in hanging up the device. The flanges B and O extend at right angles from the blotter portion far enough to allow the knob G to be put on, as shown, and still to allow the device to stand level when used as a rule, ruler, or paper-cutter.

In the center of the plate A is secured a bolt, b, over which is placed a wooden or metal plate, E, fitting between the anges B C, and the bolt b projecting through the same. Ou the end of the bolt is then screwed a knob, Gr, for holding the plates A and E togetler. This is for holding the ends of strips of blotting-paper I I, passed lengthwise around the plate A, as shown. The device thus forms a combined blotter, rule, ruler, and paper-cutter, and can be made plain or ornamented,`as desired. 'lhe plate A with its lianges and head or handle piece can all be struck up of one piece of sheet metal.

Having thus fully described my invention,

As a new article of manufacture, the device as described, consisting of the plate 'A,
