Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
PERRY DELAND, OF LITTLE OOOLEY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN WElGHlNG-BUCK ETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,842, dated July 18, 1876; application filed May 8, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PERRY DELAND, of Little Cooley,in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckets, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in the combination, with an ordinary pail and its handle, of two spring-scales, forming the connection between them, and also in the construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a section, showing my improvementattached to an ordinary pail, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
A represents an ordinary milk'pail or market-pail, and B is the usual handle or bail for the same. 011 opposite sides of the pail are formed or attached two vertical cases, 0 O, of semi-tubular or other suitable form. These cases may extend the entire height of the pail, or as far as may be necessary, and in the bottom of'each case is fastened one end of a spiral spring, D, the upper end of which is secured to a graduated scale-bar, E. This bar passes up through a slot in the top or" the case, and
the ends of the bail or handle B are fastened to the upper ends of the bars E E. On the upper end of the case 0 is a pointer or indicator, a, to show the weight on the scale-bar E. simply lifting the pail the contents thereof are at once weighed, the utility of which in everyday life is apparent. I
For ordinary carrying, hooks h h, on the upper ends of the cases 0, are hooked into slots in the upper ends of the bars E, when, of course, the springs will not operate.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the pail A with the vertical side casings G 0, books h h, springs D D, scale-bars E E, and the bail B, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The hooks h h, in combination with the springs, scale-bars E E, and the cases surrounding the same, for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PERRY DELAND. Witnesses:
JOSEPH OHiLns, AMANDA BALDWIN.
