No. 1.700,828, except that in the present machine the carriage and its bed are of sheet metal construction and the ribbon spools are mounted on the main frame instead of the TYPEWRI'EING- MACI-INE 192e. serial No. scenes.

yThe sheet metal carriage bed has its bottom plate lying in a rearwardly and downwardly inclined plane and fixed on the upper ends of a pair of raceway members 11 connected by a tie rod 12, these raceway members of the shift frame of the machine (which .comprises said members, tie rod and bed) 'being opposed to a pair of companion station-k ary raceway members 13 secured to the side vwalls of the main frame 14 of the machine,
'and suitable antifriction balls being interposed between the stationary raceway members and shift frame raceway members. Said parts coact to support and guide the sheet metal carriage to shift upwardly and rearwardly in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the flat bottom of the bed when shift key 15 is depressed.

So faras above described the parts are all constructed and operate as in the Corona machine as heretofore known. In the machine, as constructed in accordance with vthe vpresent invention, key-.operated means' are provided'fer releasing the carriage and arresting it at predetermined points after Jump movements under pull of the carrlage advancing cable and spring drum. Also the brackets are utilized to support the ribbon spools and their pawl and ratchet driving devices, and one of these brackets (that at the left hand side of the machine) is utilized for attachment of parts of thetabulating mechanism.

Said stop. is formed with asnose 69 at its rear end normally forward .of thepath of travel of stops 66 and adapted to be projected into .the path of travelof that portion of each `ing movements, andwith a transverse stop shoulder72 at the forward end of edge portion 71 adapted to abut the front face of raceway flange 34 (as shown in Fig. 4) to limit the extent of rearward projection of the stop with nose 69 in position to be struck by a traveling stop 66. Guide edge-7l coacts with the adjacent end wall of slot 68 to hold the stop 67 against swinging to the left beyond a predetermined position with relation to the carriage bed when struck by a traveling stop, the stop 67 being pivotally held at its forward end by a rivet 7 3 to the slightly upwardly offset inner end of a two-arm sub-lever 74, the main portion of which lies flatwise on the upper face of the carriage bed between the raceways. The upwardly offset inner end of sub-lever 74 is provided at its rear edge with a finger 99 extending transversely of the chine with its free end in frontgof the upstanding arm of escapement releasing bellcrank lever 44, said finger being bendable fore and aft for adjustment to insure proper actuation of the releasing bell-crank by the tabulating mechanism. Sub-lever 74 is pivotally held intermediate its ends to the bed by ashouldered pivot screw 75 and the outer arm of said lever isformed with a pendent llug 76 extending down through a clearance opening 77 in the carriage bed adjacent the left hand side of the machine.
A wire link 78, permanently bendable for purposes of adjust-ment asindicated in the drawings, connects the lower end of said lug 76 on the sub-lever with the upper end of the upwardly and rearwardly extending arm 79 of the'tabulator key lever 80. rlhe key lever arm 79 is pivotally held at its lower end by apivot screw 81 to the slightly inwardly offset lower end portionv82 of the vertical web' of the lefthand bracket 20, which web, as heretofore described, is clamped against theV inner face of the left hand side wall of the main Y frame by screws 21. The mainkey carrying arm of the tabulator key`lever'8() extends forward from arm 79 about mid length ofarm 79 under-the horizontal part 19 of said bracket 2O between the shift key lever and the main frame side wall and has its upstandingkeyl supporting front end guided in a slot 88 in a horizontal part of the guide comb 25.
The tabulator key lever is normally held returned by a return spring 84 connected at its lower end with the main forwardly extending arm of the lever and having its upper end hooked over the transversely extending portion of the angular type-rest supporting arm 27 of the left hand bracket 20. A laterally bent stop lug 85 on the upstanding key-stem portion of key lever 80 abuts the under face of the horizontal portion of vcomb 25 which has the 'key lever guide slot 83 to limit the return'movement of the key lever 80 and parts connected therewith, including stop 67. In a typewriting machine, a traveling platen carriage, a support therefor, an escapement therefor including a dog rocker, tabulator stops on the carriage, a counterstop on the carriage support, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends on the carriage support and having one arm connected vvith the counterstop for setting said stop in the path of the tabulator stops and retracting the counterstop, key operated means connected with the other arm of said lever for actuating the same, means coactive With the counterstop for determining its set position, and a second lever pivoted on the carriage support having an arm engageable With the dog rocker to rock the same to a position freeing the carriage from control of the escapement and an arm movable by a Contact finger on an arm of the stop setting lever whichV is permanently bendable to vary the action of the stop setting lever on the dog rocker actuating lever.
