N PETERS. PHDTO-UTHOGRAPHEB, WASHINGTON. I!v C.
UNITED STATES PATENT EDWARD TYRRELL, 0F CINCINNATI, oHro, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN HOLLAND,
or SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PENCIL-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,743, dated July 11, 1876; application filed June 8,1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD TYRRELL, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pencil-Gases, which is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing.
The object of the invention is an improvement in that class of telescopic pencil-cases in which the pencil-point is extended by extending the handle, and retracted by closing the handle within the outer shell; and consists, mainly, in substituting a spirally-corrugated tube and similarly-corrugated collar or slide in place of the double-slotted tubes and stud pins now used in this class of cases.
The drawing is an enlarged View of the pencil-case, the outer shell being in section, and the handle partly in section.
A is a spiral] ycorru gated tube, fitted to turn on pencil-tube E between collars D and D, which collars are rigidly secured to tube E. The tube A is also spirally slotted, the spiral slot winding in a direction the opposite of the corrugations. B is a slide corrugated the same as tube A, over which it is intended to fit, so as to slide freely. The slide is secured to handle 0 by soldering or other suitable means. The collar D is fluted, as is also a tube Within the handle 0, for the purpose of preventing the pencil-tube, handle 0, and penoil-tip from revolving. f is a pin, secured in the tip-holder; it passes through a straight slot in tube E, and into the spiral slotin tube A. The outer shell or case, the handle 0, tube E, and tip g are constructed in the usual manner.
The parts being properly prepared, the case is constructed as follows: The tube A, with its slide B in position, is placed ,on tube E, and the collars D D secured in place. The pencil-tip is then slipped into tube E, and studpin f screwed into the tip-holder near its upper end. The handle 0 is passed over slide B and soldered to it. The whole is then slipped into the outer case, which is soldered to tube E at the front end. 4
It is evident this invention may also be applied to a pen-case.
I claim In combination with a pencil-case, the spirally-corrugated tube A and collar B, for protruding the pencil-tip as the handle is extended, and withdrawing it within the case as the handle is closed, substantially as specified.
EDWARD TYRRELL.
