Description
March 17, 1931.
A. P. CONANT WATCHGASE Filed Dec. 5, 1927 I Fia. 1.
' INVENTOR. Arthur I. Conant:
ATTORNEY;
Patented Mar. 17, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ARTHUR I. CON ANT, OF FORT THOMAS, KENTUCKY, ASSIG-NOR TO THE WAIDSWORTH WATCH CASE COMPANY, OF DAYTON, KENTUCKY, A CORPORATION OF KENTUCKY WATCHCASE Application filed December 5, 1927. Serial No. 237,751.
This invention relates to watch cases and more particularly to strap or wrist-watch cases in which the movement ring or center is of peculiar construction and design and in which the bezel is of a different shape with reference to the back, so that when the strap is attached to the case the usual open space or exposed crack between the strap and case is concealed.
The objects of this invention are to provide a watch case of conventional threepiece type constructed andarranged so as to conceal the usual open space between the straps and case and to provide a case of the above nature which will be simple in construction, eflicient in use and economical to manufacture.
The invention consists in providing overhanging ends on the center and with a back of smaller area and of different shape than the bezel.
The invention also consists in the construction, combination, location and arrangement of parts, as herein fully set forth and claimed.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the face side of a watch case embodying the invention with a portion of the straps shown attached thereto;
Fig. 2 is a bottom view of Fig. 1 with the straps removed;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of Fig. 1 and shown partly in vertical section on the line 38 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an end view of Fig. 1 with the straps removed; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of Fig. 1, the pin bar lugs being illustrated by broken lines and the case partly appearing in vertical section to more clearly illustrate the construction.
In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated and which shows a preferred construction I provide a strap watch case comprising, broadly, back 1, center 2, bezel 3, crystal 4: and pin bar lugs 5. The lugs 5, in this instance, are preferably soldered to center 2, but if desired they can be formed integral with said center 2. Shoulder 6,
located on the top 7 of center (or movement ring 2) is slightly undercut or tapered inwardly and is adapted to frictionally receive flange 8 of bezel 2, which is correspondingly undercut, so that bezel 3 can be easily snapped onto center 2 and tightly held thereon in the usual manner Well known to those skilled in the art.
The back 1 is provided with a shoulder 9 which is slightly undercut or tapered inwardly and is adapted to frictionally receive flange 10 of center 2 which is correspondingly undercut so that back 1 can be easily snapped onto center 2 and tightly held thereon in the conventional manner and as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 5.
The outer ends 11 and 12 of center 2 are curved to conform with the outer ends 13 and 14 of bezel 3 and are partially cut away on the underside, thereby forming grooves 15 and 16, which grooves a-ccommo date or receive the looped ends 17 of straps 18 and conceal the space between the straps and watch case, thereby forming a compact, neat and pleasing connection between the watch case and straps.
The back 1 is approximatelyj octagonshaped, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, the ends 19 and 20 of which are inset from the ends 13 and 14 of the bezel 3, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, respectively.
As clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3, respectively, there is no visible space between the looped ends 17 of straps 18 and bezel 3 which gives the jointure of the straps to the watch case a more pleasing appearance than has heretofore been possible in threepiece constructions.
An advantage of this invention is that it may be embodied in various designs and styles of three-piece watch cases with equally good results.
It will be understood, however, that certain changes and modifications of the invention can be made without departing from Y the scope or spirit thereof as defined in the claim.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A watch case composed of back and bezel being undercut between said lugs to-receive and conceal the middle portionofitheendsof the strap. oriband ubstanti lly .as set forth I and for the purposes specified.
ARTHUR P. CONAN T. I
