Our invention relates to wipers for oil gauge rods and an object is to provide a device which is always available for use in wiping the gauge rod before it is employed for testing the depth of oil in the crank case of an automobile. WVe are aware of the fact that it has been proposed to provide devices for this purpose which are secured by the bolts of the crank case, but in such construction it is necessary to take out one or more bolts of the crank case and replace them, while some automobiles do not have crank cases provided with bolts which are available for such purpose. e are also aware of the fact that it has been proposed to provide devices for this purpose which are secured to a bracket attached either to the wall of the engine or to some stationary portion of the vehicle. Such construction requires the provision of a special bracket and the attaching of the bracket is a matter requiring considerable time and labor. A special object,
therefore, of our invention is to provide a device for the purpose above stated which may be readily clamped to the frame of the car in convenient position for use and which may be easily and quickly installed on all makes of automobiles without taking out any of the bolts thereof or drilling anyholes for the attachment of the device. In carrying out out inventive idea, we have provided a clamp, the outer end of which may be quickly clamped to a side frame member of the automobile and the inner end of which is employed to clamp a wiping member such as a piece of felt upon which to wipe the gauge rod. The device also embodies a construction which permits the felt to be readily removed for cleaning and renewal.
The full objects and advantages of our invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof, and the novel features of our inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a practical embodiment of our invention,
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the device secure to the frame of an automobile, the hood of which has been removed. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is aview in vertical section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is'a top plan View of the lower member of a clamping device.
Referring to the construction shown in the drawings, thenumeral 10 designates one of the customary side frame members of an automobile, thisframe member havingan upper inwardly turned flange 12 upon which the inner portion of the customary fender 0 14 rests. In Fig. 1, a portion of the customary hood is designated at 16 while in this figure and in Fig. 1 is shown the engine crank case 18 provided with the usualoil testing opening for receiving the oil gauge rod 20. l/Ve provide a wiper for the rod 20, this wiper being in the form of a clamp having an upper member 22 and a lower'member 24. These two members may be formed of any suitable sheet material such as steel plates. The up per member 22 is left flat, and at one end a; portion iscut out to provide two arms 26 and 28. The lower member 24 has its middle portion bowed downwardly as indicated at 30 and at one end is cut out to provide two arms 32 and 34 which aregiven the inverted U-shape shown in Fig. 2; It will be under stood as a matter of course that the two clamping members 22 and 24 are of substan tially the same size in plan so that when positioned for use, the arm 26 is above the arm 32 while the arm 28 is above the arm 34. The members 22 and 24 are each provided intermediate their length with a pair of holes 36 so that bolts 38 may be passed'through these holes for drawing the members together. The inner corners of the lower member 24 are preferably turned upwardly to formpoints 40 for securely holding a piece of felt 42 in place between the inner ends of the two clamping members.
The operation and advantages of the in vention will be obvious in connection with the foregoing description. In applying the device to an automobile, the two arms 26 and 28 of the upper clamping member are pushed between the flange 12 and the superposed portion of the fender 14 with the two arms 32 and 84 of the lower clamping member engaging the lower surface of the flange 12.
Upon now tightening the bolts 38, the device will be clamped at one end to the upper flange of the side frame member 10 while at the other end, the device will clamp one edge of the felt 4:2. It will be noted that the pair of holes in the lower member are located in the bowed portion 30 whereby a resilient clamping action is provided both for engagement with the flange 12 and for engagement with the felt 42. The points 40 serve to hold the felt securely in place so that it is always ready for use as a medium upon which to wipe the oil gauge rod 20. The installation of the device is very quickly and easily accomplished due to the provision of two cooperating clamping members which may be secured in place by clamping them upon a side frame member of the automobile so that the felt carried by the clamp is conveniently positioned for use in wiping the gauge rod when the latter is removed from its usual place in the crank case. Upon loosening the clamp, the felt 42 may be readily removed for cleaning in gasoline or for replacement by a new felt.
We claim:
1. A wiper for all gauge rods comprising two cooperating clamping members, a wiping element held between said members at one end thereof, and means for drawing said members together whereby they may be clamped to a fixed part of an automobile adjacent the oil testing opening of the crank case.
2. A wiper for oil gauge rods comprising two cooperating clamping members, a wiping element held between said members at one end thereof, said members being provided with holes intermediate their length, and bolts passing through said holes for drawing said members together whereby they may be clamped to a fixed part of an automobile adjacent the oil testing opening of the crank case.
3. A wiper for oil gauge rods comprising a fiat upper clamping member, a lower clamping member whose middle portion is bowed downwardly, a wiping element held between said members at one end thereof, and bolts passing through said upper member and through said bowed portion of the lower member for drawing said members together whereby they may be clamped upon a horizontal flange of a side frame member of an automobile adjacent the oil testing opening of the crank case. r
