These covers are so mounted that they may be moved together, in which case the hinge .plates of the two covers pivot together about the journals G. v The lower cover may be left in position and the upper'cover D moved separately, in which case the cover pivots about the bolt D y l The modified form shown in Figures 4:, 5
and '6 isi'generally the same as that shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 except that the ledge {U'is omitted. In its stead, one or more lockmg lugs or points F are provided. These polnts F penetrate into the wood or other material of the cover E and serve to position the parts and hold them together against slipping.
In the form shown in Figures 4, 5 and 6, in addition to the change just mentioned, is an additional hole G formed in the hinge plate A and a perforation G is formed in the cover E. This perforation, when the parts are assembled in the position shown in Figures 4 and 6, is in register with the perforation G in the hinge plate A. Thus a bolt i Gr may be run through the perforation G and it will pass through the perforations G in the several hinge plates A and thus .it holds them in proper position with relation to the cover. Instead of using a single bolt G two screws might be used or two bolts.
Although I have shown an operative de vice, it will be obvious tlnt many changes might be made in the size, shape. number, relation and distribution of parts without departing materially from the spirit of my invention, and I wish therefore that my showing to be considered as in a large measure diagrammatic. For example, although the type of hinge shown is adaptable for manufacture from sheet metal, stampings, forgings, and the like, I do not wish to be limited to such method of manufactureand wish it understoodthat'my claims. should be interpreted to cover any'hinge, regardless of the material or manner of maln'ng, which falls with in the terms. of any claim or claims herein.
In Figure 7 I have shown a further modified form in which the base plate of the hinge is turned under the cover and therefore it is practically concealed by the cover.
The use and operation of this invention are as follows: j
Hinges of the type shown in the several figures may be used in any association where it is desirable to have a hinge which will support two covers. One hinge alone may be used or several may be used in association. It 1s IlOll'GSSBHlZlitl that two be used as shown in the examples herewith. For most purposes more than two would not be needed.
The several parts of the hinge are made of sheet metal stampings. The parts are of course separately made. They are then assembled, the moving part of the hinge being attached to the base part by a rivet or other suitable attachment. When the hingeis to be used, the covers may be fastened to'each other in the form shown in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive. The lower cover is fastened to the hinge by being screwed to the lateral flange A of the moving part of the hinge. The upper cover is slotted to receive the part A The hinge being in position with respect to the covers, the upper cover is fastened by means of the long bolt D or any other suitable attaching means might be used, but this method forms a strengthening and reinforcing part across the back of the cover and serves to fasten the hinge in place. In the form shown in Figures 4 to 6 inclusive, the moving part of the hinge does not have any laterally extending flange. The lower cover is slotted to receive the hinge and the hinge is driven into this slot so that its points project into the material of the cover. The one or more hinges which are to be fastened to the lower cover are fastened either by a short bolt for each hinge, or by'a long 'bolt as shown. The upper cover may be slotted as shown in Figures Ito 3, inclusive or. the hinges may be attached at the ends of the cover as shown particularly in Figures I The points F on the member A as shown in the modified form of Figure 4' may be driven directly into the .wood.
