IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,349, dated June :27, 1876; application filed September 18, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTONE RIHN, of Coulterville, Mariposa count-y, State of California, have invented an Improved Bag-Fastening; andI do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to an improved bag and bagfastening.
Myimprovements can be applied to bags and sacks of all kinds; but they are more especially adapted to grain-bags.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
- Figurel is a perspective view of my device.
Fig. 2 is an end section. verse section.
Let A represent a bag or sack. In cutting out the bag before sewing it I leave one side longer than the other, as shown, and this extension or extra length I turn down, so as to Fig. 3 is a trans- -form an inward-turned flap, 1), upon one side of the bag or sack; or, if preferred, the flap could be sewed to one side of an already-finished bag or sack, so as to turn in in the same manner.
' In order to strengthen the corners of the mouth or open end of the bag or sack, I employ ametal rivet, or equivalent metallic eyelet or stud, c, for fastening them. This stud or rivet passes through the corner of the sack, and also through the flap, as represented. This forms a cheap and secure fastening for the corners, and prevents the bag from ripping or being torn at the corners, where they usually give way, owing to the strain upon the mouth of the bag. For fastening and keeping the mouth of the bag closed when it is filled, I use double-ended metal hooks c e 6. These hooks each consist of a short piece of wire, which is bent so as to form a book, i, at each end. The hook at one end of each wire I permanentlysecure to that side of the bag, mouth to which the flap is secured. As many of these hooks are used as will be required to fasten the mouth of the bag closely together. In filling the bag the flap b is drawn to the outside, and after the bag is filled the flap is placed over the mouth, so as to cover the grain or other contents, and its free edge is tucked in under the opposite edgef of the mouth of the bag. The hooks e e are then passed through both the edge f and flap 1), so as to unite both edges of the mouth, and confine the flap in place between them, thus providing a tight cover and fastening for the bag.
I thus provide a cheap and effective bagfastening, which can be readily manipulated, and which will save much time in closing the mouth of the bag.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, lS
. 1. A bag or sack having the corners of its mouth fastened with rivets, or equivalent metal studs, 0 a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.-
2. The bag A, having the inturned flap b secured to one side, in combination with the double-ended metal hooks e e e, substantially as and for the purpose described.
ANTONE RIHN.
