invention refers to knitting machines and more especially to .the means for causing a selection of needles in such machines in conformity with the pattern to be produced.
The jacks which serve in circular knitting machines, when influenced by the patterndevice, for bringing the knitting-machineneedles into or out of the working range, have hitherto been lifted, i.'e. shifted in the longitudinal. direction of the grooves in'the needle cylinder, or left in their lowest posi tion. This manner of operating is however unnecessarily troublesome.
According to the present invention these jacks are no longer brought into the range of their cam by lifting, but all the jacks are first placed in the operative position and those jacks which are not'to be operated are thereafter forced back into the grooves at their heel end, only the heels of the jacks which have to do work projecting from their grooves.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings which show the one side of the lower portion of the knitting-machine in-' Fig. 1 in section. Fig. 2 is a top plan view in a horizontal section through the needle cylinder and cam cylinder.
Figs. 3 to 5 illustrate in difierent positions and views how the jacks are operated.
Fig. 3 being a diagram showing the action exerted on the jacks by the cam, while Fig. 4; is an axial section showing a iiwce different positions and Fig. 5 is a similar view showing a jack acted upon by a guide bar.
Referring to the drawings, 1 are the jacks, 2 is the pattern device, 3 are the grooves in which the jacks are displaceably mounted, 4 is the cam cylinder, 5 is the cam-shaped guide bar fixed to said cam cylinder, 6 are the heels of the jacks, 7 are notches in the bottom portions of the heels, 8 is the needle cylinder and 9 is the cam for lifting the selected jacks.
In order that the jacks 1 might be selected by the pattern-device 2, the jacks 1 must first be all brought into such a position that their heels project from the grooves 3. With this 35 jack in 225,951, and in Germany February 25, 1927.
object in view a cam-shaped guide-bar 5 is arranged on the carrier 4, shortly in front of the pattern-device. By the rotating movement of the cylinder 8 all jacks 1 after having been previously pressed by the cam cylinder into the grooves, are made to ride with the notches 7 in their heels on the guide bar 5 and are pulled out of these grooves by the bar so that the heels 6 come into reach of the pattern-device 2. A number of heels 6 meeting solid portions of the pattern device are pushed back, according to the pattern, while other heels, for instance the heels 6 registering with holes in the pattern-device, remain in the advanced position. When the rotation continues, the heels 6 come into reach of the cam 9 which pushes upward the projecting heels 6, the other heels 6 remaining in the lowered position. The lifted jacks 1 now lift, in the usual manner, the needles (not shown) so that these needles are shifted into operative position while the needles, which have not been lifted, remain idle.
The jacks are returned to the projected position of selection by means of the guide 7 bar 5.
The same mechanism may be used for acting directly on the needle heels instead of acting upon jacks.
I wish it to be understood that I do not so desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
I claim 1. A device for selecting needles in circular knitting machines comprising a needle cylinder, a cam cylinder surrounding said needle cylinder, jackslocated in-grooves of said needle, cylinder, a cam on said cam cylinder for radially and horizontally displacing said jacks, a pattern wheel arranged near and-with its axis parallel to the axis of said needle cylinder for horizontally displacing said jacks in opposite direction and means 05 for returning all said acks into normal position.
2. A device for selecting needles in circular knitting machines comprising a needle cylinder, a cam cylinder surrounding said needle cylinder, jacks located in grooves of said needle cylinder, a cam on said cam cylinder arranged to enter grooves in said jacks for radially and horizontally displacing said jacks, a pattern wheel arranged near and with its axis parallel to the axis of said needle cylinder for horizontally displacing said jacks in opposite direction and means for returning all said jacks into normal position.
