v The present invention relates to latchesfor gates, doors and the like and has for ts prime object to provide a structure which is eX-' ceedingly simple, inexpensive to manufacture, convenient, thoroughly eflicient and reliable in use and operation, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other, ob-
ects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features 'of construction, and in the' Figure 1 is an elevation of the structure embodying the features of my invention showing the same applied, and
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof. Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the latch bolt. H
Figure 4 is a fragmentary detail view, partly in section and partly in elevation for more clearly illustrating certain detailed structural elements to be hereinafter more fully referred to.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the keeper. Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the keeper portion is denoted generally by the letter H and is formed from a single strand of wire bent in two forms to provide a straight bight portion 5 with legs 6 extending at right angles therefrom and bent over upon themselves to provide parallel extensions 7 merging into right angular extensions 8 oneof which terminatesin an eye 9 and the other of which terminates in grip 4 bar 10 the terminal of which is extended through the eye 9.
Screws 11 or likefastening elements are threadably engaged in the gate or door 12 between legs 6 and extension 7 so that the keeper H may beadjusted as may be required.
1529. Serial No. 355,734.
The latch bolt is denoted generally by the letter L' and; comprises an oblong plate bent intermediate its ends to provide'elongated.
handle portion 14' and a catch portion 15 which has a part stamped therefrom as at 16 to form a latch like protrusion inclinedfrom adjacent the end of the portion 15 outwardly therefrom thereby providing a shoulderl'l. This bolt L is rockably mounted by means of a pair offastening elements such as screws 18. A coil spring 19 is located in a recess 20 in the post or the'like 21 and impinges against the portion ltso that the catch portion 15 may engage with the bight portion 56f the keeper member H as is indicated to advantage in FigureQ. 13 i bviously the member L may be rocked to a release position either from the inside or the outside; "It will be seen that the keeper member accommodates itself'to any sagging in the gate and further may be easily adj usted because of the screws 11. The structure I is very simple and therefore may be'manufactured at a low cost and yet be made strong and durable. 7.
It is thought that the construction, utility, operation and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof.- The. present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted 'to without departing from the spirit or'scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is: r
p 1. In a latch member of theclass described, a keeper member comprising a substantially U-shaped portion embodying a pair of legs connected at one end through the medium of a straight bight, and said legs intermediate their ends being bent to provide extensions, 103
one of said extensions terminating in an eye, and the other of said extensions terminating in a grip bar, the terminal of which is disposed in said eye, means engageable with said legs and said extensions for adjustably mounting said keeper on a suitable closure member, in such a manner as to position said bight for engagement with a suitable latch bolt.
2. In a latch structure of the class described, a keeper member formed of a single strand of wire and including a substantially U-shaped portion embodying bight portion for engagement with a suitablelatoh bolt, and spaced parallel co-extensive legs extending from said bight portion, said legs merging into extensions extending in spaced parallelism thereto, said last mentioned extensions terminating in right angular extensions, a vertically disposed grip bar connecting the last mentioned extensions, and screw elements extending between the first. extensions and the legs to'mount the keeper member in an adjustable manner.
3. A keeper member comprising a-substantially U-shaped resilient portion embodying a pair of spaced parallel legs connected at oneend by a bight, extensions formed on said legs and extending in spaced parallelism thereto, and means engaging said legs and said extensions for adjustably supporting said keeper on a suitable enclosure for positioning said bight toengage a suitable latch bolt.
In testimony whereof I afiix mysignature.
REUBEN KIELSMEIER.
