COMPRES SOR CYLINDER Filed June 10, 1929 l'll 1 .L
TATES PATENT OFFICE,
JAMES O. LEWIS, OF TULSA, OKLAHOMA COMPRESSOR CYLINDER Application filed June 10, 1929. Serial No. 369,582. I
My invention relates to air and gas comfiow through the ports and valve-chamber to pressors and has for its principal object to an outlet pipe 21 leading to a pressure flow obviate the loss in eiiiciency of such devices line, (not shown); ordinarily incident to distortion of the valves The cylinder head 11 is sealingly secured by heat of compression and to drop in pres to the open end '10 of the body member 2 by 55 sure incident to cooling of the compressed a gasket 22 and bolts 23, and includes spaced medium after it leaves the compressor. double Walls 24 forming a cooling space 25 In accomplishing this and other objects of having communication with the cooling the invention, 1 have provided impriaved dc chamber 8 and provided with an outlet tails of structure, the preferred terms of pipe 26. 60
which are illustrated in the accompanying Extending through the walls 2 1 in 011'- drawmgs, wherein: cular tormatlon are channels or elongated Fig. 1 is a central longitudinal section ports 27 also forming extensions of the clearthrou h the cvlinder illustratm the 1mance siace at that end of the c hnder and 1 proved means for cooling compressed gases connecting the outer end of the compression 00 therein. or piston chamber with the chamber of a Fig. 2 is a. transverse section through the valve housing 28 on the outer side of the cooling means on the line 22, Fig. 1. head, containing a valve 29 for controlling Referring in detail to the drawings: flow through the ports and valve chamber to 1 designates a double acting compressor an outlet pipe 30 for connection with a pres- 13 cylinder including a body member 2 having sure flow line, (not shown). 7 a compression or piston chamber 3 fitted with With the compressor in operation reciproa piston 4t and rod 5 and surrounded by cation of the piston in the compression or double side walls 6 and end wall 7 enclosing piston chamber 3 causes charges of gases to a cooling chamber 8 supplied with cooling be alternately drawn through the intake medium through an inlet pipe 9 and having valves 13 into opposite ends of the chamber an open end 10 provided with a removable and compressed by opposite strokes of the head 11, the side walls being provided with piston. openings 12 in their bottom side and at op- When the piston moves rearwardly in the posit-e ends thereof fitted with intake valves cylinder as indicated by arrows, the inlet i3 13 communicating with the compression valve at the rear end of the cylinder is closed chamber and with an intake manifold 14. and gases in the opposite end of the cylinder Formed on the end wall 7 is an apertured are compressed and forced through the ports flange 15 for mounting the cylinder on an en- 19, wherein the compressed gases are cooled gine frame, and extending through the wall by the cooling medium in the chamber 8 concentric with the compression or piston previous to contact with the discharge valve chamber?) is a bearing sleeve 16 slidably enand their ejection into the outlet pipe 21. gaged by the rod 5 which extends through a Gases drawn into the to ward portion of valve housing 17 secured on the outer side of the compression or piston chamber during the wall 7 and has a packing gland 18 sealthe rearward stroke of the piston are comingly engaging the rod. pressed during the forward stroke, forced Provided in the end wall 7 in radial spaced through the ports 27 and cooled therein by relation with the bearing sleeve 16 are chanthe cooling medium in chamber 8 previous nels 19 forming clearance space additional to to contact with the discharge valve 29 and 45 that in the compression or piston chamber ejection into the outlet pipe 30. 3 and constituting elongated ports extending Thus it is apparent that, with my improved through the cooling chamber 8 and connectcylinder, the compressed gases are cooled being the inner end of the compression or pistore they reach the discharge valve, thereby 5 ton chamber 3with the chamber of the valve avoiding distortion of the valve and resultno housing 17, containing a valve 20 controlling ant loss of control of the gases, and that by cooling the gases prior to their leaving the cylinder, drop in pressure incident to cooling may be compensated for in the piston stroke to insure discharge of the gases from the cylinder at desired working pressure.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A compressor cylinder including a piston chamber and channels leading from said chamber and providing additional clearance space for said chamber, and a valve adapted to seat on the outer ends of the channels, the cylinder having cooling space about the channels.
2. A compressor cylinder including a piston chamber and a plurality of spaced channels leading from said chamber and providing additional clearance space for said chamber, and a valve adapted to seat on the outer ends of the channels, the cylinder having space for travel of cooling fluid about the channels whereby compressed fluid is cooler before leaving said clearance space.
3. A compressor cylinder having a surrounding cooling chamber and including a hollow head member having communication with said cooling chamber and having channels therethrough providing elongated discharge ports, a valve adapted to seat on the outer ends of said ports, and means for effecting flow of cooling medium through the cooling chamber and about said ports.
4. A compressor cylinder including a surrounding cooling chamber and a hollow head member having communication with said chamber and having an annular series of channels therethrough providing elongated discharge ports, an annular valve adjacent the outer ends of the ports and means for urging said valve into seating engagement with said ports at the outer ends of said channels.
A compressor cylinder having a surrounding cooling chamber and including a hollow head member having communication with said cooling chamber and having an annular series of channels therethrough providing elongated discnarge ports, an annular valve adjacent the outer ends of the ports, means for urging said valve into seating engagement with said ports at the outer ends of the channels, a valved inlet for the cylinder, a piston in the cylinder and means for cfi'er-ting flow of cooling medium through the cooling chamber and about said ports.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JAMES O. LEWIS.
