UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
JOSEPH SHIGKEL, OF BRIDGEWATER, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,970, dated J unc 20, 1876; application filed Maroh25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SHIGKEL, of Bridgewater, county of Rockingham, and State of Virginia, have invented an Improvement in Plows, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 is a side view of my improved plow. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same.
The invention consists in connecting a moldboard and plow-point by a projection on the former, and a countersink on opposite sides of the latter, in addition to the ordinary clamping-bolt, thus enabling the point to be fastened, after reversal, with equal security and and facility as before.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre spondin g parts.
A is the beam, B is the standard, 0 is the mold-board, and D is the land-side, of a plow. E is a casting, which fits upon the lower side of the rear end of the beam A, and is secured to it by a bolt, F, which passes through the beam, and through a curved slot in the casting E, so that the beam A may be adjusted to cause the plow to leave or take land by loosening the bolt F. Upon the casting E are formed down weirdly-projecting arms G, which have slots in their lower end to receive the bolts by which they are secured to the landside handle H, so that, by loosening the said bolts, the beam A may be adjusted to cause the plow to run deeper or shallower in the ground. The land-side handle H is secured to the land-side D, and the mold-board handle 1 is secured to the mold-board O, and the two handles are connected together by rounds in the usual way. J is the point, which is made diamond-shaped, and has notches formed in its edges, uponthe opposite .sides of its center, to receive the forward edge of the foot K, secured to the bottom of the land-side D. The upper notch in the point J receives a corre spondiugly-shaped projection formed upon the mold-board 0. This construction assists in holding the point J in place, and prevents it from becoming clogged with roots, weeds, or other rubbish. The land-side D has a recess formed in it to receive the rear part of the point J, and the said point is secured in place by a bolt, the hole for which is countersunk upon both sides of the point to prevent the bolt-head from projecting beyond the surface of said point. Upon the mold-board O is formed a circular projection, 0, which fits into the countersink in the under side of thepoint J, and into which is screwed the bolt that secures the said pointJ in place. The projection 0 takes the strain from the bolt, and supports the point more firmly.
By this construction the point J ,when worn, can be turned, reversed, and again turned, so that'it is capable of four adjustments.
L is the share, which is secured in place by a bolt, and is made double, or with both sides alike, so that it may be reversed when worn.
Having thus described my invention, I. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with a clamping-bolt, of the plow-point, having countersiuks on both sides, and the mold-board having corresponding projections to fit said countersinks, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JOSEPH SHIOKEL.
