This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in polishing machines and'more particularly to that type of machine in which a swinging arm carrying a polishing disc is mounted on a vertical standard, the object being to provide means for mounting the armeand for raising and lowering the same in position to operate on the material in the working area of the arm. The outer end of the arm 33 terminates in i tubular portions l4 and 45 in which are pulley being driven by a belt 57froni the driving pulley 36 and'the pulley carries a' belt 58 which passes over a" pulley 59 mounted on the shaft 51 in the outer frame 49.

This frictional driving means is enclosed by a housing as clearly shown and provides a novel construction in raising and lowering the swinging arm of the polishing machine which is positive in operationQ In Figure 3 of the drawing I have shown thefrictional member 65 arrangedin a neu-- tral position ,tojralloiw theldriv'en shaft 54 to rotate without op"crating the nut '38 working on, the v. screw'37 and by either raising or 65 cai ibe thrown into engagement with either of thefrictional cups so as to rotate in the desired direction, which in turn rotates "the shaft .41 and through the beveled gears 39 and 40,, the nut 38 is rotated so as to either raise or lower the frame of the polishing machine.
.In machines ofthis character it is desirable to; form a construction in which the swinging frame can be .rotatedaroundla standard and as the :weightsis notequally distributedin view of the length of :the sectional arm, itis desirable toprovide means for taking care of the side thrust, which I have accomplished and by thegparticul'ar manner of mounting, theparts, the machine is balanced.v

whichis:revolublymounted on the standard on ball bearings; so that-thesame can swing around the standard-freely, the sleeve -23-con: stituting a guide on which the tubular portion of the working armis slidably mounted.

arm slidably mounted on said body carrying f a nut for working on said screw for raislng and lowerlng said arm, a second arm earned by the free end of the first-mentioned arm provided with a polishing disc, a 'tubular driven shaft, means for drlving said polishing device from said tubular shaft, pinions mounted on said shaft provided with internal cup portions, an operating shaft mounted insaid tubular shaft having a double conical frictional member adapted to cooperate independently with said frictional cup-portions of said pinions, a shaft for driving said nut and a gear carried by saidshaft meshing with said pinions'.
