Description
C. GAHR.
APPARATUS FOR CUTTING AND EMBOSSING LEATHER sTRAPs.
No..178..845. Patented June 20,1876.
WL'ZMJBJI fizi/elzifir w I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CONRAD GAHR, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR CUTTING AND EMBOSSING LEATHER STRAPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. P788 15, dated June 20,1876; application filed December 10, 1875.
means for simultaneously cutting out, creas ing, raising, and, if desired, also embossing, the straps or layers used on breast-collars, breechings, belly-bands, martingales, turnbacks, back-bands, trace-bearers, and other parts of harness.
The invention consists principally in combing a pair of knives with a grooved block, to which said knives are rigidly attached, said grooved block serving to crease-andraise the strap at the same time that the knives cut it into shape. Heretofore the straps werecut by hand in conformity'with a pattern laid upon them, and were subsequently raisedin the middle by being pressed by hand into the hollow of a block, and finally creased by a creasing-tool. These manipulations consumed much time, and were apt to draw the strap out of shape. By performing all these functions at one movement, and by machinery, a perfect strap is produced at a comparatively small expense. r My invention also consists in'making the concave raising-block sectional to allow the alternate employment on the same block of several embossing-tools.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents an end view of the raising and cutting block. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view thereof, showing amodification in the method of raising the strap. Fig. 4 is a bottom view thereof. face view of a strap, cut, creased, and raised by the same. Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section of the raising and cutting block, showing itprovided with .a removable embossingtool. Figs. 7 and 8 are two face views of straps that have been cut andraised by the same block, but are nevertheless differently embossed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre-. sponding parts in all the figures.
The letter A in the drawing represents a metallic block as long and wide as the strap to be cut, and'flanked at the sides by two knives, B B, of the form which is to be imparted to the edges of the strap. The knives are, by means of screws, rivets, or other means, attached to the sides of the block A, and their cutting-edges project beyond the intermediate surface of said block. This intermediate surface is grooved or hollowed in the direction of its length for raising the leather strap to be cutthat is, imparting a convex surface thereto'and has near the knives one or more narrow projecting ribs. a, wherewith to crease the strap in the desired manner, all of whichv is clearly indicated in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4..
For use, the block A is attached to a suitable plunger, and the strap 0 to be cut and pressed placed upon a table, D, as in Fig. 1. This table should have a convex projection, b, under B B will cut the'strap of the required width and outline, the ribs a a meanwhile creating the surface of the strap, and the rib 1) raising the strap into the groove 01.. Thus at one operation the I labor of shaping the strap is completed. 1
The modification shown in Fig. 3 has refer- I ence to the process of raising the strap, and consists in placing a narrow strip, 6, of leather or equivalent material upon the table 1), be-
neath the leather 0, and under and'in line with the groove 01, in which case the rib b is dispensed with. This narrow strip 0 will properly raise the leather into the groove, and may afterward remain under the completed strap 0 between same and a suitable back piece or lining, f. Where the leather is to be but slightly raised the rib b and groove e' may be dispensed with.
When the strap is to be also embossed I form suit-able embossing ribs or depressions 9 you the face of the block A between the knives B B. But as the same size and form of strap are frequently desired with different embellishments, as indicated in Figs? and 8, I
propose to make that part h of the blockA on B B, the surface of the block having the which the embossing ornaments g are formed removable from said block, as indicated in Fig. 6,,so that it may be displaced by another piece, h, of thesame style, but having difl'erent embossing ornaments.
section h can be fastened in the hollow of the block A, into which it is fitted by suitable screws or other means.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combined cutting, raising, and creasing tool, composed of the block A and knives The embossingcreasing-ribsa and the raising-groovedbetween the knives, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the shaping-block A, which carries the knives B B, with the removable embossing-section h, substantially as specified. CONRAD GAHR.
