CORNER CUSHION PAD ACKING DEVICE Filed Nov. 15, 1928 Willie) Bowersacn y EM! WM Attorney Patented Dec. 23, 1930- j UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE W'ILBEB IE. BOWEBBOCK, OI BOOHRTEB, m xonx, ABSIGHOB TO IN! BOX CODA, OI ROCHESTER, NEW YOBK,L CORPORATION OI NEW YORK roan- OOBNEB-OUSEION-PAD PACKING DEVICE Application fled llovember 15, ms. Serial Io. 819,518. I
The object of this invention is to provide a new and improved form of packing device. Another object is to provide a corner cushion ad of two sections hin ed together 5 that is adapted to be placed in t e corner of the box and hold the article to be packed securel in the center of the box and spaced apart rom the walls and corners of the box. These and other objects of the invention will be illustrated in the drawings, described in the specification and pointed out in the claims at the end thereof.
In the drawings: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the box in each of the upright corners of which is placed one of my improved corner cushion pads made of two sections hinged together. Figure 2 is a (pser'spective view of one of these cushion pa partl broken away and shown separate from the ox, but shown with the two sections placed at right angles to each other.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the cushion pads partly broken away, the sections being shown in line with each other. I
In the drawings like reference numerals indicate like parts.
In the drawings reference numeral 1 indicates one cushion pad and 2 indicates another cushion pad each of which pads is built up of a series of layers of light paper product material and more especially a corrugated board. These pads are joined together by the top layer 3 which is scored on the line 4 and which connects the two pads together by a hinge on the line 4. In Figure 2 I have shown these two sections at right angles to each other which is the position that the two sections will take when they are placed in the corner of a box. In Figure 3 I have shown these same two sections placed in line with each other which is the position they ould take when merely stored or packed for shipment.
In Figure 1 I have shown a box 5 having these packing devices placed at each corner of the box. The article to be packed in the box is placed in the box and one of these packing devices or spacers is then placed in each corner of the box between the article to be packed and the box. The cushion pads in each case are made thick enough to nicely take up the lost space between the article to be packed and the box at each corner, so that when the cushion pads are all in place the article is securely held centrally in the box with an air space at each corner between it and the box and air spaces between the four sides of the article to be packed and the four sides of the box. This leaves an air space at each upright corner edge of the box and also leaves large air spaces between each of the four vertical sides of the article to be packed and the four corresponding sides of the box. 3
I claim:
1. A packing device having two sections each consisting of a cushion pad made up of a series of layers of paper products, the sections being joined together by the top layer which extends across and is attached to both sections, said top layer acting as a hinge for the two sections, said packing device being adapted to be placed in the corner of a box on the inside of the box with one section hearing against one side of the box and the other section bearing against the adjacent side of the box said sections being located between the top connecting layer and the box, said sections being placed on each side of the corner line of the box with an air space between them, the device being interposed between the contents of the box and the corner of the box and being adapted to be inserted in the corner of the box after the contents of the box has been placed in the box.
. ing against one side of the box and the other section bearing against the adjacent side of the box said sections being located between the top connecting layer and the box, said sections being laced on each side of the corner line of the x with an air s ace between them, the device being interpose between the contents of the box and the corner of the box and being adapted to be inserted in the corner 6f the box after the contents of the box has been placed in the box. a
3. A packing device having two sections each consisting of a cushion pad made up of a. series of layers of paper products, each cushion pad being rectangular in longitudinal and transverse section, the sections being joined together by the to layer which extends across and is attache to both sections, said top layer acting as a hinge for the two sections, said packing device being adapted to be laced in the corner of a box on the inside of t e box with one section bearing against one side of the box and the other section bearing against the adjacent side of the box, said sections being located between the top connecting la er and the box, said sections bein place on each side of the corner line 0 the box with an air s ace between them, the device being interposed between the contents of the box and the corner of the box.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WEBER E. BOWERSOCK.
