My invention relates to jack posts to be employed in connection with drilling rigs and particularly for the support of the draw works including the usual hoisting appara-' tus.
In the drilling of wells and also in their pumping operations, a hoisting apparatus is an essential element, and it is common to mount at the side of the derrick platform, a
frame work supported upon a. plurality of jack posts, fitting against the derrick platform and inclined upwardly in a relation parallel with the legs of the derrick. These jack posts furnish with the derrickitself a frame work upon which the draw worksmaybe mounted. Present constructions include wooden posts for this purpose. p l
It is an object of myinvention to provide a steel jack post of improved construction to substitute forthe old type of wooden jack post. The invention resides in the adapting. of a steel jack post for use in this connection, an object being to form upper. and lower at taching brackets by means of which a steel beam may be employed.
Referring to the. drawlng herewith, Fig. l is a side elevation of my jack post shown in the position in which it'is mounted upon a well derrick, parts of the derrick being shown in section and broken away. Fig. 2 is a side View of the jack post taken at right angles to the view shown in Fig. l and having various parts brokenv away for greater clearness. - At the lower end of the beam A, I provide an attaching bracket 13.. Said bracket has two upper plates 6 which, as shown in Fig. 2, are spaced apart a suitable distance to receive between them the web 5 of the beam. Transverse openings through the plates 6 and the web 5 are provided to receive bolts 7 by means of which the bracket may be secured to the post. Below the two upper plates 6 is a plate 8,, which is set at a slight angle tothe plate 6 and has on its lower side a squared recess 9 to fit about the sill 2 of the derrick. The. lower extension 10 upon the plate which fits against the outer side of the sill 2 may be recessed for lightness of construction and has a central opening 11 therethrough to receive a bolt 12 by means of which the post'is firmly secured to the sill of the derrick.
The upper end of the beam is formed with a bracket C, which is shaped to fit between the therethrough to receive a clamping bolt 17 by means of which it is secured firmly to the head boards for support.
This post is of extremely simple construction, but when thus formed with the attaching plates at each end thereof secured to the web by means of the bolts 7and 7, the said plates fit against the ends of the beam and are rigidly attached thereto in such manner that the beam is rigid and strong. The brackets are so shaped as to fit against the parts of the derrick which are ordinarily employed, and .it will be possible, therefore, to secure the jack post shown, in position for supporting th e draw works with a minimum of time and enort.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is A jack post including a steel body of H- beani construction adapted to stand at an angle from the Vertical, a lower metal bracket including a plate to engage the upper side of a derrick sill, two upwardly extending arms transversely of said plate and adapted to straddle the central web of said H-beam,
means to secure said arms to said web, a pair of downwardly extending connected plates on said bracket to engage the side of the derrick sill, a reenforcing web between said plates, and a bolt to connect said bracket to said sill.
