UNITED rATEs PATENT FFIoE.
DAVID J. POWERS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROCKING-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,557, dated June 13, 1876 application filed April 1o, 1876.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, DAVID J. PowERs, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Platform Rocking-Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part'of this specication, in which- Figure l represents a vertical central section of a platform rocking-chair embodying Fig. 2 represents a vertical transverse section of the same, taken on line :v a: drawn through Fig. l; and Fig. 3 represents a like section on the line y y.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention relates to that class of rocking-chairs mounted upon a platform; and consists in the combination of the parts employed in connecting the chair proper to the platform, whereby the same can be rocked, or held in a fixed position, as desired, and at any desired inclination, as is hereinafter more particularly described.
In the drawing, A represents the platform, which may be made of any known form that will admit of securing the chair thereto. B B are the rockers, and O O are the members forming the back of the chair, and may be arranged in any known manner, the width being such as to allow therockers to rest upon the side pieces ofthe platform. D is a transverse shaft, permanently secured to the center of the rockers immediately over the Vcenter of the platform, as shown in Fig. l. D is a transverse cross-bar, secured at its ends to the side pieces of the platform immediately under the shaft D. E E are fiat bands, of india-rubber or other suitable elastic material, which pass over the shaft D, and downward through mortises in the cross-bar, and are secured therein by keys d passing through the bands immediately under the cross-bar. The arrangement of the bands is such as to hold the rockers firmly on the platform, and at the same time yield sufficiently to admit of the'rocking movement of the chair thereon. The side pieces of a, adapted to enteran elongated mortise in the respective rockers, as shown'in Fig. 1, by
which means the rockers are prevented from moving longitudinally on the platform. F is a transverse shaft, journaled to the rockers forward of shaft D, and so arranged as to admit of a rocking movement. Permanently attached to each end of the shaft F is a knob, d', by which a rocking movement is imparted to the shaft when desired. G G are depending arms, permanently attached to shaft F adjacent to the inner sides of the respective rockers, and extending downward in close proximity to the inner surface of the side pieces of the platform, as shown in Figs. l and 3. The said arms are provided each with a series of notches, e, formed in the front edge, and so arranged as to receive a pin,f, permanentlysecured in the side pieces of the platform, when the arms are moved forward by a rocking movement of the shaft, by which means the rockers are so locked as to prevent them from being rocked on the platform, and in the proper position to give any desired and fixed incline to the chair.
I do not intend to limit myself to the use of two notched arms for locking the chair in a fixed position, as one may be sufficient for that purpose; nor do I limit myself to the extending of the cross-bar Dl across from one side to the other of the platform, as short pieces or studs, through which the bands pass, may
be used.
