IMPROVEMENT IN BARREL-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,488, dated June 6, 1876; application filed February 10, 1876.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN TILLEY, of West Troy, in the county of Albany, and in the State ofNew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a machine for trussing, smoothing, bevelin g, chamfering, and crozin g barrels, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- 7 Figure l is a side elevation of my machine. A represents the frame of the machine, upon which are secured four metal rails, B B, two On these rails the cross-heads O 0 work. To the top and bottom of each cross-head O is attached a segment or are, D, of a circle, having a groove on its inner side, by .which the driving-ring pulley E is held in position, and the machine partially worked. These ring-driving pulleys are provided with an inside flange, a, by which the head-truss hoops are forced into place, and the ends of the barrel passing through are caught, and held so as to impart to the barrel a rotary motion, for the operation of the working-01f tool. The cross-heads O are provided with the metal arms Y, to which are affixedthe rings X, by means of which the quarter or bilge truss-hoops are forced into position, and the trussing of the barrel completed at the same time and by the same motion. Each cross-head is also furnished with a rest, G, upon which the working-oft tool H is worked by means of a lever, O. P is a rest to support the barrel preparatory to the operation of trussing, smoothing, beveling, chamfering, and crozing the same, which rest is hinged at one end for the more convenient operation of the same, and also with a lining, b, of sand or emery paper for the smoothing off of the outside of the barrel. J J are two rests standing on the inner ends of the rails B B-one on each side of the 1nachineto hold the rest P in place. K is a turn-table working upon a pivot-or bolt, and provided with two straps or pitmen, I I, connecting it with the ends of the cross-heads (J. The turn-table has also two levers, L, for its operation, and by means of which the machine is worked to and from the ends of the barrel. M M are two braces to support the cross-heads O, and resting upon the bottom or base thereof. His the working-off tool, constructed to turn on a pivot, and has on one side the ohamfering-knifc d and crozing-knife e, and on the other side the edge-trimming knife f, as shown, by which means the barrel is first-chamfered and crozed, and then trimmed on the edge.
The ring-driving pulleys E are operated by means of a belt passing over a shaft above the machine and around the pulley.
The barrel to be operated upon is first set up and then placed on the rest P, when the machine is worked by means of the levers L, and the barrel is trussed and smoothed, and at the same time the working-off tool H being operated by means of the lever 0, the barrel is beveled, chamfered, and crozed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the ring-driving pulleys E, having interior flanges a, and the sta: tionary rings X, attached to the cross-heads O by the arms Y, substantially as and for/the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination ofthe sliding crossheads 0,.with grooved segments or arcs D, the rings X, and the ring-driving pulleys E, operated by belts from shafting above, sub- ?tanhtially as and for the purposes herein set ort 3. The combination, with the sliding crossheads 0 0, having grooved segments D, the rings X, ring-driving pulleys E, pitmen I I, and turn-table K, with levers L L, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
