DOORLATCH Filed July l5 1929 Patentedl Dec. 2, l193() v Y i,

' K'Appiieaiin meid July if',
This invention relatesrto ycertain newi and useful improvementslindoorlatches.
f Vlts chief objectV isthe provision of meanscontrolled by the door-knob for' maintaining Athe latch-bolt in its proj ected position, whereby the' doorfmayf'bev lockedV through the I mediumof the knob-actuated latch-bolt with'-V f out theJ usent keys or other separate locking mechanism.
` spective views of the doorknob, the latch bolt actuating spindle (fragmentary), and vthe face-plate for the doen Figure 6 is an enlarged cross -section taken substantially in" the plane of line 66, Figure 4.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views. Y
`This improved latch has been designed primarily for interior doors of homes, screen doors and the like, where it is desired to latch Y `the samey from the inside of the room and thus Y prevent others from gaining entrance thereto. To 'this end, my device is controlled by and is a self-contained part of the door-knob, the latch-boltrbeing free for actuation when the knob i's'in one position and locked in its projected or thrown position'whenrthef knob is in another position.
Referring now to the drawings,`10 indicates a swinging door havinga mortise 1l therein containing the casing 12 of an ordinary bolt-type of doorflatch, the bolt being c indicated at 13 and actuated by the customary spindle'or shaft 14 through the mediumA of one or the other of the door-knobs 15,116 ap- Another object ofv th'linventionQis topro-y ofthe latch-bolt. `diametrically4disposed,radial notches 19and a pair of radial recesses or grooves 20 arl ranged at substantially right .anglesvlto `the notches and Vcomparatively shallow." These recesses `are Jformedv in ,that `face theref'op positej the dooreknob 16, which. has; arpair of :outwardly-facing lugs or teeths21 for in'n terlocking lengagement with either set `of notches or recesses. Secured tothe inner side plate 22 containing a socket 23 for receiving the inner shank portion-of the ,door-knob 16, as seen in Figures l and 2, said socketlter-v minating. f in an inwardly-directed annular l of theoloor about thespindle14A is a face- `serves torconstantlyurgethe knobftoward the doorto bring its teeth 21 intoregister with eitherthe notches'19 orrece'Vsses/20'in' v thecollarli."l j j ln `Figure 2iis` shown the positionof 'the Sechi postontthe'knobGis in its rearward Yparts when the latch-bolt f13 is free to'func-A p tionras a vcustomary lmob-actuated latch,^` V,In
position on the spindle 14 With its teeth 21 engaging the shallow recesses 2O in the collar 18, thereby interlocking the knob With the spindle, so that as the knob is turned the bolt will be accordingly projected or retracted, as With the ordinary type of door-latch. Vhen it is desired to latch the door from the inside and prevent entrance to the room from the outside, the spindle 14ris locked against turning, Whenthe bolt is projected, by turning the knob 16 a quarter ott a turn. This releases the knob-teeth 21 from the recesses 20 and brings them into register with the notches 19 in the spindlecollar 18, Whereupon the spring 26 forces the knob toward the door to bring the knob-teeth into en gagement Vivith the alining notches 25 in the viaceplate. Thus, the spindle is positively held against turning 'and door is ltirmly locked Then `the occupant ofthe room desires yto open the door, he pulls on the knob 16 to release its teeth from engagement With the pairs0f1notches 1S), Q5 and gives it a. quarter of a tui-n to bring said teeth into engagement r Vwith the recesses 20.
If desired, the knob 16 may have anfarrow 29 or other suitable indicator to serve as a tell-tale for predetermining its position. -In the drawings, the vertical positionV of the arrow indicates thatthe bolt 13 is locked in its projected position, While theV horizontal position thereof indicates the released position.
I claim as my invention 1. A door latch, comprising a bolt-actuating spindle having knobs thereon,l one of said knobs being movable relatively to said' spindle and having a locking element thereon, and complementary locking means applied to the spindle and to the door, saidkn'ob locking element being `engageable with oneof said locking means in one position of the knob and Withboth of said locking means in its other position.
2. A door latch, comprising 'a bolt-actuatingspindle having knobs thereon, one .of said knobs being movable relatively to `said spindle, a collarvon the spindle having radial notches therein, a face-plate adapted for attachinentto the doorand through which said spindle passes, said plate having -a notch therein, `and `a locking tooth on said movable knob arranged to interlock in one position with one of said collar-notches and in another position'vvith the other of said collarnotches and said face-plate notch.
3. A door latch, comprising a bolt-actuating spindle havingknobs thereon, one osaid knobs being movable relatively to said spindle, a collar on the spindle having radial notches therein, a face-plate adapted for attachment to the door and through Whic'hsaid spindle passes, 'said plate having a notch therein, 'a locking tooth on said movableknob arranged to interlock in oneposition with one having alpair of teeth projecting therefrom in opposing relation to the spindle-collar, the latter having a pair ot radial peripheral notches and a `pair of radial recesses in its inner face for receiving said teeth, and a face-plate adapted for attachment tothedoor and through which said spindle is adapted to extend, said face-plate'having a pair ot' radial notches therein and with which the spindle-collarnotches are adapted-to register in oneposition of the spindlethe knob-teeth being engageable with thecollar-recesses in one position Vof the movable yknob and with the collar-notches and face-'plate notches in the other position thereof.
