GARMENT HANGER Filed March 25. 1929 f9 UNIT: 14 I INVENTOR. Z4 A I Patented Dec. 2, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT- ems SIFTON A. GOLDBERG, F BROQKLYN, NEW YORK.
V GARMENT HANGER Application filed March 23, 1929. Serial No. 349,442.
This invention relates to garment hangers and has for an object to provide a hanger that is adaptable for supporting a coat and also for supporting garments suspended by straps; another object of the invention is to which, Fig. 1 is an. elevation of a garment hanger embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a plan view from the lower side of Fig. 1,"Fig.
3 is a detail, partly sectioned, showing the ex-' vsand abutting on the washers 23 f in slot 17.
tension attachment and Fig. 4 is another detail, partly sectioned, showing. one'form of pivotal attachment for the hanger'extension.
My invention, as herein shown, is applied to a garment hanger of the type commonly used for coats and by itsuse these hangers may be used for garments having shoulder straps. Extensionsare provided pointing in jwardly and below the body of the hanger upon which the straps of the garment are placed. These extensions are pivotally, or otherwise secured to thebody of-the' hanger so that when not in use, they may be folded within the body and out of the way.
In the drawings, 11 is the body of the hanger which is provided with the usual suspending hook 12 and terminates in the rounded ends 13. These hangers are usually arch shaped as shown and pointing inwardly fromeach end the extensions 14 are provided below the body of the hanger. ,These ext'en-' sions are open at theends to receive the straps 16 of the garment 15. This makes a balanced su port for the garment from the hook 12.
en the body 11 is usedas the suspendingmeans, the extensions 14 may not be required and for-this reason they are made to fold within the body 11, as indicated in Figs. 2, 3 and4. The body is provided with a slot as pence characters. i The member 14 may be formed from a punching, or from bent wire and the body 7 may be made from wood, sheet metal or from' indicated at 17 into which 14 can be folded as shown in Fig. 3. The member 14 is pro- Vided with an eye at 21 and a rear arm at 19. i It is connected to the body by the pivot 18 and when in the horizontal position, the arm v19 '0": engages the body at 120 as indicated in the dotted outline, Fig. 3; When folded within the slot 17 it is entirely concealed except a short protrusion of the arm 19. When pressure is applied to thisprotruding member,14 5.;
is forced from the slot to be brought into active use. v
In order that member 14 may remain in the I position in which it is placed it is retained by spring action comprising the spring washers 5'? 22, Fig.' 4, placed on each side of the eye 21 The pivot 18 through the washers 24, clamps 1 the parts together as shown and strengthens the ends of the hanger. The members14 at each side of the hanger are similarly con structed with parts having moulded material. 7
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a garment support as described, the 2;
combination, an arch-shaped body portion with a central hook forsupporting-a garment, a slot in each end ofisaid body, a member pivotally secured in each 'slotand projecting inwardlybelow, said body to support a 30 garment having straps, said members turning on their pivots within said slot andhaving armsengaging said body portion tohold I them rigid in a horizontal position.
2. A garment support asdefined in which themembers are clamped between spring washers mounted on their pivot bear ings to hold said members in the position in" which they are placed.
3. In a garment support as. described, the Q the same referin claim 1 T combination, a body portion with a central hook for supporting a garment, a slot in each end of said body, a member pivotally secured in each slotand projecting inwardly below said body to support a garment having straps, means for rigidly supporting said member in a horizontal osition, said member collapsing Within said s 015 and having a pro jxiction whereby it may be forced from said 5 0t.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
SIFTON A. GOLDBERG.
