Patented Oct. 28 1930 UNITED STATES- rnnnnnrox n. BALDUI, or BrnsnA roiwNnw-yon NAME PLATE- 1 Beflle of abandoned application Serial no. 295,759; filed J'u1y 27, 1928. Thisapplica tionefiled October 1, 1929. SeriaI No. 396,542.
This invention relatesto new and useful improvements in signs, and particularly to signs in the form of name plates. y This is a refile of the abandoned application filed July 27, 1928, Serial Number One object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in I construction, and which can be manufactured at a comparatively low' cost.
Another bJectI' is to provide adevice of this character wherein a plurality of mov- V T able and removable letter carrying plates are adapted to be placed, whereby to permit l 3 playing various names or legends.
7 Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing l y In the drawing: y Figure 1 is a front elevation of a name plate made in accordance; with the present invention. 1
V Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional '25 view on' the hue 22'of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 33.0f Figure 1 v Figure 4 is a sectional perspective view of the movable letter plate carrying member.
a0 of the device. 7 Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents the outside frame of the device, which is preferably formed from a sheet of metal having a rectangular sight opening 11" therein, the edge portions of the plate, surrounding the opening, beingi bent inwardly at an obtuse angle,as shown at 12. The portion of the frame, or escutcheon,
outwardly of the said opening 11, is approxi- Arranged to be disposed within the escutcheon 10 is aframe 13, which is formed from a sheet of metal having a rectangular, elongated opening 14 therein, flanges 15 being struck out from the longer edges of said open-s ing, and each of said flanges having its free long edge rebent, as at 16, to form the channel or groove 17 A metal plate 18 is slipped in said groove 17, whereby to close the rear of porch post,1or the like. When the -letter portions .12 contact with the outer faces of marginal edges of t edges of the frame 13 are formed the 20, whereby'to retain said plates in'rproper f position. 7 Each end of the plate or frame 13 is offset rearwardly, as at 21, andis a-pertured for the reception of a fastening device 22, by means of which said fram'e'inay be secured to a support, rsuch asa door, wall, or 5 plates have been properly positioned on the frame "13,; the tabs '19 are'pinched tightly thereagainst, and the frame secured to the door, wall,'orv the like, by passing nails "one:
screwsthroughthe' apertures 23 formed in the end tabs 24, of such frame. The escutcheon is then secured to the door .or wall, by
placing the same in such position that the the letter plates 20, as clearly seen in Figures 7 2 and 8, of the drawing. .=Each end ofthe" outer, 'or face-portionfiof the frame 13,18
formed with a tab 25, which is adapted to be bent outwardly into the qpaths'of'the end platesv 20, whereby to maintain said plates'i 3 against lateral displacement, from the ends of the frame. Nails or screws are passed through the corners of theescutcheon, and into the door, wall, or'the like. support.
What is claimed is: t V V 1. A sign including a plate having an opening, walls extending angularly' :from the s opening for contact: withla support to space the platetherefrom, attachingears at the ends of the-plate, a plurality of letter plate retainin tabs on'the margins of the plate,a stop ta on each end of the plate, and an escutcheon plate arranged in covering relation tothe first plate and having a sight opening registering with a the opening of the first plate. 7
2. A sign including a plate having anopening the walls of which have angularly extending flanges terminally erimped to form plate receiving grooves, the peripheral edge of. theplatehaving bendable letter plate retaining tabs, bendable stop tabs at the ends of the plate forietaining letter plates, attach- 50 the frame. The upper and lower longer ing ears on the endsof the plate, a plate re- 9? In testimony whereofilfafli'x iny signa 1 ture.
