CABINET Filed Feb. 23, 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Oct. 21, 1930 SEBASTIA SGHMALZGRUBER, or BLOOMFIELD, CONNECTICUT JCABINET Application filed February 23, 1928.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cabinets used for various purposes as for example store furniture, filing cabinets, wall cabinets, medicine oabinet-s, display cabinets, etc. and it particularlyhas for its object to provide a peculiar arrangement of units which together constitute a drawer unit, the units when in one correlative position serving as self-closures and when-in another position serving to permit full display of and aocessto the contents of the several units.
Generically the invention comprises a drawer or container composed of at least two units so hinged together that they may be brought into alignment in a manner that the end wall of thefront unit will act as a closure for the face of the back unit, but which front unit when the drawer is pulled out of the holder may be swung at right angles to the back unit so that the front or face of the front unit may lie parallel to the front or face of the back unit and to. one side thereof.
Another object is to provide a drawer arrangement for sectional cabinets, the drawer being so constructed that its various elements will not interfere with those of adjacent units.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, my invention consists in the novel details of construction and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in theclaims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stack of a sectional cabinet embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of one cabinet section with the drawer units pulled out and opened up.
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of one sections unit taken on the line 33 of Figure 1..
Figure 4 is a perspective viewiof my drawer combination removed from the housing of the unit.

Figure 5 is adctail perspective view of a modification of my invention.
' Figure 6 is a detail perspective view showing how the supporting rods are arranged.
Figure 7 is a detail perspective view showing how the guard rods are placed in position, parts being broken away. I
In the drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all'the figures, and with'i'eference particularly to the first'embodiment of my invention, it will be observed that 1 indicates the housing or casthe sectional unit which-1s closed on all sides but the front. The housing 1 is adapted to receive the drawer combination that constitutes the essential part of my nvention.
This drawer combination consists of a back unit 2 and two front units 3 and 4 respectively. These units preferably are of the same height and depth and each are composed of a back wall 7, two side walls 8, a top wall 9 and a botto nwall l0. One of the back-side edges of each of the two front drawer units 3 and 4 is hinged to a front side edge of the back section or unit 2 as indicated at 5 so that when the several drawer units 2, 3 and 4 are folded together as indicated in Figure 4 the fronts of the units 3 and 4 will be opposed while the front of the unit 2 will be closed by the adjacent and 4, this being the'fully closed position of my drawer combination.
By hinging t 1e units 3 and 4 to the unit 2 in the manner stated when the drawer combination is pulled out and opened up as shown in Figure 2, it will be seen that the units 3 and-4 lie at right angles to their former position and make ric'ht an 'les with the unit 2 m z; 1
the fronts of the several. units, ing in parallelplanes so as fully tofexpose the contents of the several units 2, 3 and 4.
The casing 1 is preferably provided at its front edge with a cleat 6 and a second cleat 6 is secured beneath and to the unit 2 so that these cleats form stops when the drawer is pulled out to the open position.
In Figure 5 I have illustrated a 1nodificahowever, ly
er section or unit 23 is of half the width of the unit 2 and the front unit 20 (corresponding to the unit at) is hinged at 21 to the unit 23 along the edge 21. In order to hold the units 23 and 20 in straight alignment so that they can be pushed into or pulled out of the housing 1, I preferably provide a countersunk latch 22 to secure the edge opposite the bin god edge thus preventing jammin in pulling the drawer out of the casing 1. 7
Each of the drawer units 2, 3 and l has its side walls countersunk or recessed as at 11 and each is provided with front and back directed holes 12 in which shelf supporting rods 13 are held to support the shelves 19.
I also provide the side walls with the trans verse recesses 14 and 15 to receive the guard rods 18, the recesses 15 being of two depths 16 and 17 to facilitate introduction and removal of the rods 18 as will be clearly understood by reference to Figures 6 and 7 of the drawings.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the advantages, construction and mode of operation of my invention will be clear to those skilled in the art, and while I have illustrated two embodiments of my invention it is obvious that other modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
lVhat I claim is:
1. In cabinets having open front casings or housings with drawers insertible therein; a drawer structure comprising a back unit and at least one front unit, each said units comprising a body having a top, a bottom, two side walls and a back wall, and having an open face, means hinging a back-side edge of the front unit to a front-side edge of the back unit whereby said units will line up with the open face of the back unit at right angles to the open face of the front unit, the side of the front unit which is adjacent the back unit serving as a closure for the face of said back unit, said units when swung on the hinge out of alignment one with the other, being adapted to lie at right angles one to the other with the open front faces of all units in parallel planes.
2. In a cabinet having casing open at the front; a drawer combination to fit within the casing and accessible through the front thereof, said drawer combination comprising three sections of like height and depth and each comprising a back wall, two side walls, a top SEBASTIAN scinniijzennnnn.
