Description
H. P. ROBERTS BOTTLE STOPPER Get. 14, 1930.
Filed Dec. 16, 1927 Patented Oct. 14, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HENRY P. ROBERTS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHESTER J. STRONG, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS A with the BOTTLE STOPPER Application filed December 16, 1927. Serial No. 240,522.
This invention relates to bottle stoppers of the type employed as temporary closures for mineral Water and similar bottles after removal of the usual caps or other permanent closures or seals. The invention has for its general object to provide a stopper or closure of this character which is of simple construction and which may be manufactured quickly at small expense, as will be best understood from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings; in which,
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a bottle upon which a stopper embodying the invention is secured;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevational view of the same; g p
Fig. 4 is an elevational view of the same fastening means disengaged from the bottle;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the packing for the stopper; and r Fig. 6 is an elevational View of the packing.
' stopper comprising a body portion 13 adapted to fit into the neck of the bottle 14 and having an upwardly extending portionproviding an outwardly extending flange 15 adapted to seat upon the top of the rim 16 of the bottle. An annular groove 17 is provided in the upwardly extending portion of the packing which is engaged by the inclined depending fingers 11 and held against the holder 10.
The stopper may be held so as to suitably close the neck of the bottle by any suitable fastening means such as a wire fastener or bail 18 having its ends pivotally mounted in openings 19 in the ears 12. The wire fastener 18 is bent to form a spring loop 20 and a fastening loop 21 adapted to be snapped over and held against the lower edge of the rim 16 of the bottle.
It will be seen that the bottle stopper provided in accordance with the invention is of simple and inexpensive construction and consists essentially of two pieces, namely, a packing and a holder for the packing. The packmg may be composed of any suitable material, such as rubber, and may be readily formed in one piece as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. T he holder may also be formed from a single piece of sheet material, such as sheet metal, in a siinple shaping operation of stamping or punching to form a Wafer-like substantially flat disk having integral projections bentupwardly from the opposite edges thereof to form the ears and two or more inclined fingers struck from the material of the disk and depending therefrom.
lVhat I claim is:
A bottle stopper comprising a holder in the form of a one-piece substantially flat disk of sheet material having integral projections or ears bent upwardly from the opposite edges thereof and inclined fingers struck from the material of said disk and depending therefrom, a packing secured to said holder by said fingers, and a fastener pivoted to said cars.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
HENRY P. ROBERTS.
