Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 77,352, dated May 16, 1876 application filed February 24,1876.
To all whom it may concern:
thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The drawing shows a side view in section of my invention.
The object of my invention is to produce certain improvements in bill-holders and per per-files, whereby a much cheaper-and stronger device isobtained than in those in common use. The improvement is simple and may be thus described.
In the accompanying drawing, ashows the bottom or base of the file. b shows the back, which is attached to the bottom and curved, as illustrated in the drawing. 'cis a spring, bent to conform with-the curve of the back, and is fastened at one end to thebottom a,and' at the other to the inside of the inner part of Rigidly attached to the spring, and extending the length of the back of the file, is the holder or retainer d. This holder is formed of a single piece of metal doubled at its'lower edge over a strip of as to hold it firmly clasped or clamped between the two parts ofthe holder which form the any suitable manner, the outer end ,of the strip of leather 0, which is heldat its opposite end between the two parts or double of the retainer. Between the base a and the retainer d are placed suitable index-sheets for the filing of letters, bills, 850.
The operation of the spring will keep the holder pressed firmly down upon the papers within the file, and when it is desired to introduce more papers all that is necessary to do is to turn the cover over upon the back b, and press down on said cover, which-operation will raise the holder from the papers within the file, and allow of the insertion of such others as may be desired. Any number of springs may be employed, two, however, being preferable, one
retainer, and its manner of attachment to the cover; but
\Vhat I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the bottom a, back I), coverf, and spring a, the holder or retainer d, formed of a single piece of metal, clamped around a strip of leather, 0, at its lower end,
said strip of leather being fastened at its opposite end to the cover, as set forth, and said spring being attached to the bottom and the back of the file, substantially as and for the purposes herein described.
In testimony that I claim-the foregoing as my own I afiix my signature in presence of 7 two witnesses.
