' This invention relates to improvements in trunlrs known as wardrobe trunks and par-,
ticularly to that type t. trunk which has openings on two sides. Theobyect of the mvention is to provide a'base on which the trunlrmay be readily rotated so that access 7 may be had to the interior through both of the sides which open. A further obgect of the invention is to provide a hase that forms an integral part of the trunk, isconiipact in its structure soas not to detract frointhe appearance of trunksof this character, and to provide means for preventing damage to the base. I
In the accompanying'drawing which forms a part of this application, the figure is a vertical longitudinal section of a trunk having a base constructed according to the invention.
In said drawing 1 designates the top of the trunk to which is secureda handle 2, in the usual manner; The base which is connected to the bottom of the trunk comprises a metallic bearing plate 3, secured to said bottom by screws 4. Said plate has an axial hub 3' extending below the underside thereof and rests on a supporting plate 5 which also has an axial hub 5- extending through the hub of the bearing plate 3. f
The hub 3 resting on the supporting plate 5 holds these plates in spaced relation and the plate 5 has formed in its upper face near its outer edge an annular recess 5 in which is mounted a set of ball-bearings 6 in frie tional engagement with the lower face of the plate 3. r 1
Secured to the bottom of the supporting plate 5 by means of screws 7 is a larger base plate 8 which has in its upper face a recess in which the-plate 5 is mounted. c v
'The plates 3 and '5 are pivotally connected together by a bolt 9 the-headof which bears upon a washere9" housed in a recess 1 formed in the bottom member of thetrunk the end of said bolt engaging a nutcountersunkin the bottom of the plate 5. I i y i The base plate 8 isprotected by anannular 'hoop 10, L-shaped in cross section which 18 fixed on the periphery of thebaseplate and projects under its bottonnso thatit sllghtly elevates the latter and prevents the heads of the screws from coming in contact with the The base plate is further surroundedby an annular metallic guard memberl l which is preferably hollow and substantially U-shaped' y to in cross section. "lhis member l1 fixer the bottom member of thetrunkand extendsdownward therefrom to near the bottomlof thebase plate 8; The guard member is an' important adjunct to the base'as i't-can; with stand hardlmockswvhirih mightdnjurethe plate-8.
The trunk shown has two lids or doors p and 13-h1nged on oppositesides-of sameane is-provided WltlltllG usualcorner plates1'6} Each lid 12 and 13 constitutesa trunk coin suit 18'by means of a hanger *and hook-19.5
The lid 12 has two compartments in the ex ample'shown, beingdivided in two arts by a transverse partitionQO, thus givmgtwo' compartments 21 and 22, closed by their cor-- responding flexible covers 23 and 24, which may be used to keep soiled clothes, or for other purposes, and which pocket may have the shape of a folding case, when closed.
The trunk is divided into two compartments by'a longitudinal partition 25, one of the compartment-s which corresponds to the lid 12, being occupied by drawers 26, and the other which corresponds'to the lid 13, being destined as a wardrobe and being provided for this purpose, with the hanger bearer 27. 28
designates a box, or shoe-casewhich ishoused in the last named compartment. V
I cla1mp 1; A trunk comprising a bottom member, a
metallic bearing plate fixed to the latter having an axial hollow hub extending below the plate, a supporting. platoon which said hub rests and having-a hollow hub extending throughthe hub of the bearing pla'te,said
,supportingplate having an annular groove formed in itstop face near its outer edge, ant1-fr1ct1on bearings mountedin said groove and supporting the bearing plate, a bolt extending through the hubs having its ends countersunk in the bottom member and supion porting plate and pivotally connecting the latter to the bottom member, a base plate 7 I having a recess in its upper face in which the support ng plate is mounted, screws connectmg the supporting and base plates, and an annular hoop surrounding and extending unv der the bottom of the base plate to elevate the same.
H 2. Aztriinkcomprising a bottom member, a metall c bearing plate fixed to the latter havingan axial hollow hub extendingbelowthe plate, a supporting plate'on which said hub rests, and having a hollow hub extending through the hubof the bearing plate, said supporting plate having an annular groove formed its top face neartits, outer edge, anti-friction bearingsmounted in said groove and. supporting the bearing plate, abolt eX- tending through the hubs having its ends countersunk in the bottom member and supporting plate and pivotally connecting the latter ,tothe bottom member, a base plate having alrecess in its upper face in which the supporting plate is mounted, screws connecting the supporting and base plates, an
annular, hoop surrounding and extending under the bottom of the base plate'to elevate.
the same,.and an annular guard member sub stantially U-shaped in cross section fixed to said bottom member and surrounding the base plate above the bottom of the latter;
