The invention relates totilts for covering open trucks, particularly railway trucks, in place of the usual canvas tilts, These canvas tilts are expensive and under repeated use,

5 sustain a considerable amount of wear which soon renders them leaky so that they no longer fulfill their purpose. a In order to avoid the defects ofcanvas tilts, use is made according to the invention 19 of a paper tilt, said covering sheet being 7 made watertight and fireproof by suitable:

impregnation and being protected against tearing at theedges.

In respect of impermeabihty and proof against fire and also in respect of safety in railway operation, this tilt mustbe regarded as quite equivalent to a canvas tilt. Although as a rule it can only be used once for covering railway trucks, it is however so low in first cost as still to form a considerably cheaper truck cover than canvas'tilts.

The tilt may be rendered watertight'and fireproof by coating it with bitumen of high melting point. The coating may be applied by brushing or pressure, the strength of the paperordinary packing paper in particw larbeing thereby considerably increased The tilt is preferably made oftwo sheets of paper with an intermediate layer of bitumen, the outer sides of the tilt being also provided with a coating of bitumen.

()n the other hand, it is new to'employ for railway purposes watertight and fireproof paper tilts, the width ofthe cover or tiltbeing less than the width of the body of the railway truck. In order to enable the ends of these tilts to be fastened as securely as possible to the truck, the invention providesforthe edges of the sheets of paper to be turned over and thus secured against tearing. strengthened by the insertion of wires or by the application of woodenbattens.

The tilt 2 consists of a sheet of waterproof and fireproof paper of less width than the distance between the Sideboards of the body of the truckso that when in place it will not overlie the upper edges of the side boards and thus 'provideventilating spaces on the sides of body 1. If desired, the ends of the tilt or cover 2 may also liewithin the ends, though I prefer that the reinforced ends may overhang the end'boards, particularly when they are reinforced by inserted battens.

Beforeplacing the tilt or cover in place, metallic strips 4, which may be flat bands,

'wires or hoops, are placed in engagement with the eye or hook 5, and thestrand is passed therefrom upward, across and downward to engage the eye 5, thisproviding a series of transverse supports upon which the cover 2 is laid, and when the coverisin position the return strand is positioned to overlie the outer face of the cover. In practice, the ends will be drawn tight and made fast to the eye 5. p 7

It will be noted that the tilt is, supported by the inner cross strands and is'held in place by the outer strands.

Referring to the drawings, the body 1 ofthe truck isprovided, at intervals with eyes As the cover is supported at intervals, in case of rain or snow, excessive sagging of the cover will be prevented.

The cover sustaining and retaining means 4, as well as the cover, are adapted for use and reuse, and it is within the scope of my invention to use any appropriate waterproof cover with the supporting and securing means.

What I claim is 1. A covering for bodies of vehicles comprising a sheet of material which is interposed between and is maintained by a plurality of spaced supports which are detachably connected to the body.

2. A tilt or covering for open trucks having a width less than the width of the'body of the truck to provide open spaces between the margins of the tilt and the sides of the body, transverse underlying supporting and overlying retaining means for the cover, which means span the spaces and are detachably connected to the opposite sides of the body of the truck.

3. A tilt for open body trucks comprising a flexible sheet covering of a waterproof and fireproof character, metallic means for associating the covering with the truck, said means consisting of spaced apart flexible members between which the tilt is positioned, said members being held in engagement with eyes on opposite sides of the body of the truck.
