The present invention relates to finger nail buffers or polishers, and aims to providea novel and improved implement of that kind.

Another object of the invention is the pro vision of a novel flexible bufier element.

A further object is the provision of novel means for detachably connecting the buffer element with a handle, in order that said element may be readily detached and replaced.

\Vith the foregoing and other objects in iew, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved finger nail buffer or polisher.

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof.

Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.

A suitable handle 1 is provided, which may be of metal or other suitable material, and is provided with a longitudinal socket for receiving the clamp 52.

The clamp is composed of a doubled strip of resilient metal, the terminals of which are provided with transverse jaws 3 for clamping the butt end portion of the bufi'er element betwcen them. The diverging arms of the clamp have a tendency to spring apart, and the mouth of the handle socket is preferably tapered, as at at, so that when the clamp is forced into the socket, the jaws 3 are moved toward one another toclamp the buffer element between them. The outer surfaces of the jaws are preferably grooved or otherwise roughened so as to be conveniently grasped between the thumb and finger of one hand when moving the handle and clamp together or apart.

The buffer element comprises a core or piece 5 of tough second growth wood or other suitable resilient material, and said core decreases in thickness from its butt end to its tip, in order to increase the flexibility of the buffer element toward the tip thereof. A covering 6 of chamois or other suitable butting or polishing material is provided on the core or piece 5. Said covering may be secured on the core by-double surface ad-v be inexpensively manufactured, so that the buffer element may be replaced economically, especially for use by manicurists so that a new buii'er element may be used for each customer.

The free terminal portion of the bufl'er element is'freely pliant, and the cover 6 preferably extends beyond the outer end of the core or piece 5 to be freely flexed toward either side.

By pulling the jaws 3 and handle 1 apart, the clamp may be completely or partly withdrawn from the handle, and the jaws separating will release the buifer element, so that a new bulfer element may be readily in-. serted. By placing the butt end portion of the bufier element between the jaws and pushing the clamp and handle together, the buifer element is clamped between the jaws.

The'jaws 3 have flanges 9 at their ends to overlap the edges of the buffer element, and said jaws also preferably have inturned edges or teeth 9 to bite in the cover 6, so that the-buffer element is securely held in position coaxial with the handle.

The buffer is convenient and eflicient in use, and may be readily carried or stored away.

As shown, the clamp is slipped into the handle, but the handle and clamp may have a screw-threaded connection, if desired.

Having thus'described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A finger nail buffer element decreasing its butt to its opposite end, and a 'cover of bufiing material thereon.

3. A finger nail bnfier comprising a buffer element decreasing in thickness from its butt to its opposite end, and a handle attached to the butt end portion of said element.

4. A finger nail buffer comprising a buffer element decreasing in thickness from its butt to its opposite end, a handle, and means for attaching the butt end portion of said element to said handle.

5. A finger nail buffer comprising a handle having a socket, a buffer element, and a spring clamp having diverging arms and jaws on said arms t'i'i clamp said element, said arms being movable into said socket and when forced therein being sprung toward one an other to clamp said element between said jaws.

6. A finger nail buffer comprising a bnfier element, a handle having a socket, and a doubled spring clamp having diverging arms movable into said socket and forced toward one another when moved into said socket, said arms having jaws at their free ends to clamp said bnfl'er element between them.
