Description

June 24, 1930. M R, THROWER 1,766,270y
GLIPER Filed June 15, 1927 Inventor Patented .lune 24, 1930 STATES earner ortica MARION R. THROWER, F TUCKERMAN, ARKANSAS, ASIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO HUBERT HALL, OF TUCKERMAN, JACKSON COUNTY, ARKANSAS CLIPPEB. i
Application led June 13,
My invention relates to clippers and is adapted particularly for use in clipping hedges and for trimming other bushes of a similar nature and has for its object to provide a power driven clipping blade adapted to rotate at a high rate of speed so as to accomplish the clipping operation in a more eiiicient and expeditious manner.
A further object is to provide a clipper of relatively light weight and adapted to be easily moved from place to place along the hedge as the trimming operation progresses and having means remote from the clipper for operating the same.
Other objects and advantages reside in the special construction, combination Vand arrangement of the various elements forming the invention as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view with p-arts shown in section so as to illustrate the blade operating mechanism, and,
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken along a line 2 2 of Figure 1.
In the drawing, wherein for the purposes of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, I provide a housing comprising 4a substantially circular plate indicated at 5, one side of which is flattened and provided with anv upturned flange 6. The curved edge portion of the plate 5 is provided with a down turned flange 6. The plate 5 is further provided with an opening' A into which extends an arm B formed integrally on said plate 5. To said iicnge Vis secured the rear edge of a set of stationary teeth 7, the outer or toothed ends of which are arranged in an arc coinciding with the arc formed by the plate 5.
On the free end portion of the arm B I is a rotatably mounted shaft 8 having a ring gear 9 arranged near its lower end and to the underside of said ring gear I provide a plurality of clipper blades 10, said blades extending radially with respect to the'plate with their ends terminating slight- 1927'. serial No. 198,458.'
ly short of the outer edge of the plate. It 'i willbe noted from Figure 2 of the drawing that the ring gear 9 is disposed above the plate. 5 whereas the clipper blades 10 are :arranged below the plate and coact with the underside of the teeth 7 f AA cap 12 is .arranged at the upper end of the shaft 8 suitably enclosing the same whereby to exclude dustvor dirttherefrom and between the cap and the ring gear 9 is interposed a setV of ball bearings 13 to facilitate the rotation thereof. Extending from one side of the cap 12 isa tubular .housing 14 rotatably supporting a pinion shaft 15 at one end of rwhich is a drive pinion 16 operatively engaging the ring gear 9. The housing 14 extends outwardly from the rear of the plate and has a exible housing 17 connected thereto by a suitable coupling 18, said fiexible housing having a flexible drive shaft 19 arranged therein and connected at one end with the drive pinion 16 with its opposite end connected with a suitable drive mechanism. The drive shaft 19 may be connected with an electric motor or other suitable mechanical operating means adapted to rotate said shaft .at a fairly high rate of speed. f
Upon the upper face of the plate 5 is arranged a handle 20, preferably disposed above the shaft `housing 14 by means of which the clipper is carried and guided during the clipping operation.
It will observed from Figure 2 ofthe drawing that the bottom portion of the plate 5 is entirely open so as to prevent the accumulation of clippings between the clipper blades 10 and the housing which might tend to clog the same and interfere with the operation thereof.
It is obvious that the invention is susceptible to various changes and modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the sco-pe of the appended claim and I yaccordingly claim all such forms of the device to which I am entitled.
I claim: v Y
A clipper of the character described comprising a flat plate having a downturned vmarginal flange and an upturned marginal flange, and further being provided with an opening adjacent the upturned flange, an integral supporting arm on the plate eX- tending into the opening, an integral journal housing adjacent the free end of the arm extending upwardly thereon and having an .open bottom, a shaft rotatably mounted in the housing and depending therefrom, a ring gear mounted on the depend-ing portion of the shaft, anti-friction means interposed between the ring gear and the arm, radially extending cutting blades mounted on the ring gear and extending beneath the plate and Within the downturned flange thereon7 stationary cutting teeth extending forwardly in the horizontal plane of the lplate :and fhaving an upturned 'dfllge -ifor vconnection with the upturned plate flange for detaehably mounting said lteeth thereon ina manner toco-act with the radial blades, a casing mounted on the arm rearwardly of the journal housing and eX- tending rearwardly over the plate, a drive :sha-ft rotatably mounted in the casing, a pinion gear on the drive shaft in mesh With the ring gear, andmeans for connecting the sha-,ft to a source of power in a manner to IQGate the same.
:testimony whereof il affix my signature.
MARIONA R. THROWER.
