This invention relates to a-vise ofthetype adapted to be clamped to abenchor the like and has as its aim to provide a device of this sort which has various. featuresof novelty and advantage. I 1 I .Moi'e particularly an aim of. the invention is to provide an r improved .vise which is characterized by its extreme simplicity in construction, by its strength and durability, and by its convenience and effectiveness in use. r if My improved vise comprises a relatively few parts, each of which while being relatively cheap in manufacture, is strong enough to stand considerable abuse. The parts are so arranged and assembled that the vise may be readily secured to a bench and articles or pieces of work of various-kinds may beeasily and quicklyclamped in'the 20 vise, and when so clamped, are securely held in place. I V 9 Other objects will be in partvobvious and in part pointed out more in-detail hereinafter. The invention accordingly consists "in the "features of construction, combination of ele- -ments and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth and; the scopeof the application of ee-wliich will be indicated in the appended claims, I
In the accompanying drawings wherein I h ave shown for illustrative purposes one embodiment which the present invention may "Fig. 2 is a'forward end "view'thereof Fig.3is'asideview; Figylisatop'plan view; and A Fig. -5 'is' sectional view taken substan' tially on line 5+5 of-Fig. 1; v
Referring to the drawingsin detail, my improved vise includes a fixed jaw element "and a'mov'able jaw element, the fixed jaw eleinen't having means'for" clamping the same to a bench or other support, and the movable .]ZL'W, element having a screw operating, in a nut carried by the fixed element so that the aws may be moved relatively to one an other. i
The movablej aw element is preferably in the form of' ail-integral casting having a longitudinallyextendingbar or slide 10 and a jaw- 11- ad acent one'end ofthe slide and extendingtransversely .or at right angles thereto.' The jaw 11- is inthe formof an up standing web or flange, and extending forwardly from the bottom web is a base flange 9; Between the flanges 9 and 11 is a reinforcing rib or web 12. The flanges 9 and 11 in effect constitute an angle bar. The bar or slide 10 is'preferably channel-shaped, thus providing the bar with an upper web 13, a
lower web 1 1- and a rear wall 15 which is preferablylongitudinally slotted as at 15.-
The channel-shaped bar. 10 has a forward .end wall 16 in which is journalled a screw 17 having on its outerend an operating handle 18. Pinned to the screw 17 just rearwardly of the .end wall 16 is a collar 19 for preventing'e'ndwise movement of the screw relative to the bar. The rear end of the screw has a gudgeon 20 which is rotatably-mounted in a lug or ear 21 carried by thelbar 10 adacent itsrear end and extending into; the
channel, as-illustrated vmost clearly in Fig. 1.
The fixed jaw element has an angle bar formedof an upstandingweb orflange 3O opposed to the flange 11 and a base flange 31 horizontally disposed and extending rear- :wardlyfrom' the lower end of the flange 30. Betweenthe flanges and 31isa reinforcfing web, 32- Depending from the'base flange 131 isvan liesliaped arin 33 whichterminates I in a boss'B l. The L-shaped arm, together with thebottom of the base flange 31, forms an open. guide-way or channel in which is slidably mounted the bar 10 Extending from'thevertical leg of thearm 33 is'an 1ntegral lugi35 which hasty threaded bore'or ring sense.
The means for clamping the vise to a support such for instance as a wood-workers bench, comprises a screw threaded in the boss 34 and having swiveled to its upper end the head 41. It will be noted that this head is opposed to the base flange 31so. that the support designated by the letter S may be clamped between this flange and the head 41.
The screw 40 may be turned by a handle 42.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
it will be seen that I provide in accordance with the present invention a very simple but efiective and durable vise. 'The work may,
be securely clamped in any desired position between the jaws 11 and 30 by merely inserting the'work in the desired position between those and then turning the screw 17 by means of the handle 18.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently Widely difi'erent embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limit It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is in tended to cover all of the generic and specific t features of the invention herein described channel-shaped. slide, an angle bar located upon one end'of and extending transversely of said slide and providing a vertical jaw face and a horizontally extending flange, a fixed transversely extending angle barthe vertical web of which last-mentioned angle bar constitutes a jaw opposed to said first mentioned jaw, an L-shaped arm depending fromthe flange of saidlast mentioned bar and forming 7 therewith a guide-way or groove 1n wh1ch said slide is mounted for reciprocating movement, a lug extending from said arm into said groove and into the channel ofsaid slide, said lug providedwith a threaded aperture, a
