Description
D. STUTZMAN.
FRUIT DMER. No.1776,4 92 Patented Apr125,1876.
WITNEEEEE- UNITED STATES PATENT QEEIGE.
DAVID STUTZMAN, OF LIGONIER, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-DRIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,492, dated April 25, 1876 application filed March 23, 1876.
To all lwhom t may concern Be it known that I, DAvID STUTZMAN, of Ligonier, in the county of Noble and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Driers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,V which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in fruit driers; and it consists in the arrange ment and combination ot' parts that will be more fully described hereinafter, whereby a simple, cheap, and effective drier is produced, the lower or metallic part of which can be folded up for transportation.
Figure lis a vertical section of my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views of the same.
a represents the lower part of the drier, in which the fire is made, and which is made entirely of sheet metal. This part a is made of four separate pieces, which are hinged or pivoted together at the corners in such amanner that they can be folded together, as shown, for transportation, thus forming, as it were, a single sheet or plate, and greatly decreasing the amount of space and room that would be otherwise required. i
Secured to insides of the two side pieces of the part a are the iron bars or rods c, which serve to brace and strengthen the sides, so as to make themrigid and strong, at the same time that their upper ends d, which are bent at right angles and passed outward through the sides, serve as supports or rests, upon which the wooden frame e rests. This frame e is covered by a hinged convex top, o, and has a door, g, at each end, so that the sliding trays h, which are put in at one end,l can be taken out at the other, and so as to give free access to the whole inside ot' the frame. The trays are covered on their under sides by wiregauze, so that the heat from the stove below will rise freely upward through the article that is being dried, and escape through the Ventilating-holes in the top.
The fire will be builtin a stove thatis placed in the lower part, and while the heat rises directly upward, the smoke is carried oft'outsid by means of a smoke-pipe.
By means of the hinged cover o the heat and ventilation in the frame can be accurately controlled, and access is given to the top row of the trays n and the interior ot' the frame.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a fruit-drier, the bottom a, made of sheet-metal plates, and pivoted together atthe corners, as described, so that it can be folded up for transportation, substantially as shown.
2. In a fruit-drier, the combination ofthe frame e and bottom a, pivoted together at its corners, and provided with the rods c, the rods havin g their upper ends d bent outward, so as to form a support for the frame, substantially as set forth.
3. The wooden frame e, having a` hinged cover, o, in combina-tion with the sheet-metal bottom a, hinged at its corners, as described, 'the bottoni serving' as the receptacle for the stove or furnace, substantially as shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of March, 1876.
DAVID sTUTzMA-N.
