M invention relates to a device for punching oles in cans, and is particularly adapted for use in connection with condensed milk cans or the like wherein it is necessary to '5 punch holes in the top surface of said cans in order that the contents may be poured therefrom.-

An object of my invention is to provide punchin device for a can, in which a plurality of holes may be. punched in the top thereof and be equi-distant from the side wall of the can. 7

Another object of my invention is to provide a punchin device for a can in which the holes punched y said device will'b'e spaced from the rim of said can at a distance determined to allow the most eficient pouring of the contents thereof.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character indicated, which can be readily made of sheet metal stampings and which at the same time is light and strong.

A still further ob'ect of this invention'is will which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in parts which will hereinafter be more fully described, illustrated and claimed.

Fl are Q is a perspective view of the preferre embodiment of m device. ln manufacturing this device it is extreniely important that the device will be simple in construction so that the expense of production will be negligible, as the device is particularly-designed so that it may be givento a customer upon the purchase of a certain brand of condensed milk, or the like.

The device itself may have the product manto grovide a device for punching cans which is ufacturers trademark printed thereon. As will be clearly seen, the device will stimulate the sales of a product and also serveas an excellent advertising medium, the compara tivcly small costof manufacture being offset by its advertising value.

Referring to the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout, the various figures described above adequately'illustrate my invention, and the following detailed descriptlon 1S commensurate with the above mentloned drawings in enabling an artisan to construct the same.

The reference numeral 1 designates the punching device in its entirety. The device is preferably made from a narrow strip of sheet metal forming a handle 2, one end of said strip is provided with a pair of'spaced projections 3 and 4. The space between the projections 3 and 4 may be of an suitable width but it is preferable that sai space he comparatively narrow for the purpose to be hereinafter set forth.

The other end of the strip 2 is bent as at 5 so as to form a handle for the device, said bent portions of said strip being, secured together by means of suitable rivets 6, thereby forming a light and strong handle for the device.

The projection 3 of the device is provided with a sharpened end 7 substantially as shown in the drawings, said pro'ection forming a punch. The projection l unctions as a spacer for positioning the punch I? with relation to the side Wall of the can and for this reason it is of greater length than the projection 3, and extends beyond the end thereof.

Figure 1 showsmy invention in o erative relation with respect to a conventiona type of can designated by the numeral 8. Preparatory to the punching of a hole in the can 8, the device is held in upright position on the top surface 9 of the can 8, the sharpened end 7 of the projection 3 engaging said surface. The sharpened edge 7 is spaced from the rim 10 of the can 8 by means of the space between projections 3 and 4. As the projection 4 is longer than the projection 3, as

heretofore described, said projection will engage the side wall of the can 8 in a sliding action, as is clearly shown in Figure 1. The space between the projections 3 and 4'wil1 de- 1 termine the distance between the hole punched by the puncher 7, and the side wall of the can. It is preferable that said s ace be comparatively small so that the ole punched will beclose to the side wall of the can so as to facilitate the pouring of the con-'- tents from said can.

I am aware that some changes may be. made in thegeneral arrangement and com binations of the several devices and parts,

as well as in the details of the construction thereof without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth. in the foregoing specification and as defined in the following claim; hence, I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the said device and parts as de scribed in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawmgs.

Having thus described my invention, what I now claimas novel and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: I f

A can head punch com rising a flat strip of metal bent upon itself orming a loop-like handle at one end, spaced apart tynes formed at the other end thereof, one of the said tynes forming a punch and the other of said tynes functioning as a spacer. I
