F. ARMSTRONG.
ELAS'TIC ADJUSTING STRAP.
No.176,Z63. Patented Apr'1118,1876.

PATENT OEEIcE.
FRANK ARMSTRONG, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN ELASTIC ADJUSTING-STRAPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent. No.
176,263, dated April 18, 1876; application filed February 21, 1876.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK ARMSTRONG, of
' Bridgeport, county of Fairtield, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improved Elastic for Vests and 'Pantaloons and l do hereby declarethat the-following is such a full, clear, and exact description thereof, having reference to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference thereon, forminga part'of my specification, as will enable any person skilled in the artn to construct the same.
The object of my invention is to furnish the means for tightening a vest or pantaloons in order to secure a' proper tit, but at the same time relieve the garment from undue strain.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of my iin-proved' elastic for vests. Fig. 2 is .an enlarged view of one` of the wire coils of the, elastic,.and shows the mode of attaching the buckle and loop to the coils. Fig. 3 shows the buckle and the loop. Fig. 4L is a longitudinal vertical sectiomof a part of Fig. l., and Fig. 5 a transverse section in the line ma' of Fig. l.
In Fig. 3, A indicates -a metallic buckle, and B a metallic loop, which are seen in Fig. l applied to a series of Wire coils, C. For the purpose of connecting. the buckle and loop with said coils, they are constructed with shanks d, havipg their ends bent over so as to form hooks 0l. These shanks are'of such length as to enter a'proper distance Within the coils in the act of attachment thereto, and so take hold of the coils some distance from their ends, vthus avoiding a liability of the coils becoming drawn oft' orseparated from the hooks when the former are under ,severe strain.
In Fig. 2 I have shown one of the Shanks d, having its hook d passed over a4 ring or section, e, of the coil C, such section or ring ot' the coil C having been flattened down by a blow with any proper instrument, which act at the same time presses the hook d' down over the Wire and thus securely holds it 5 or the Wire may be first pressed down to the condition shown in Fig. 2, after which the hook df may be passed over the Wire at c, without the hook itself being pressed down upon the Wire. In this manner each of' the shanks of the bucklevand the loop are secured to the several coils C, after which strips of thin metal, formin g caps F, are applied, so as to surround the coils C at their ends', as shown in Fig. 1, and thus make a proper finish for the elastic. i
The elastic is to be permanently attached or sewed to the back of a vest or pantaloons by the loop B, and a bucklestrap ot' cloth being also provided in the usual way to engage with the buckle A, or ;by two buckles and straps, so that it can be changed from one garment to another. The elastic may be strained more or less, to ei'ect the proper adjustment of the garment, without liability of injury either to the garment or the elastic under the articulations of the body. Staycords (shown in dotted lines-in Fig. 1) may be passed through the coils, in the usual manner, to prevent the over-stretch of the coils.
Having thus described myrinvention. what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is f As a new article of manufacture, the elastic adj usting-strap for garments, consisting ofthe buckle A and loop B, provided, respectively, with Shanks d and hooks d', and the wire coils C, fastened to the hooks, as herein described and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK ARMSTRONG. Witnesses :v
