Description

A. S. BUNKER.
LANTERNS FUR STREET-LAMPS.
No.176,164;. Patented April 18, 1876'.
N. PETERS PHOTQLITHOGRAPNER, WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
AUGUSTUS S. BUNKER, OF LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS FOR STREET-LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,164, dated April 18, 1876; application filed March 6, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS S. BUNKER, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex and Commonwealth of. Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Lantern for StreetLamps.
. The object of my invention is to so construct a lantern that the panes of glass can be removed and inserted quickly and at pleasure, either to repair breakage or for the purpose of cleaning, (no putty being used to tighten the same.)
This I accomplish by so constructing a lantern'fra ne that two or more of its four corners can be removed, (being opposite, if two are used,) and having its flanges so constructed that they shed down and over a pane, forming a groove for the purpose of receiving the same, thus allowing a pane to he slipped from its frame, or in case of breakage, a new one inserted; and I do declare that the following is such a full, clear, true, and exact description thereof that others skilled in the art to which it appertaius can make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings for a more complete description thereof, like letters indicating the same parts in each of the drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a View of a lantern-top with my improvement attached; Fig. 2, a section of a corner with my improvement applied, taken at a a and Fig. 3 shows the eye, the springcatch, a corner with its hooks and the flanges.
A is a lantern-frame, designed to hold the pane; B, a pane of glass, designed to form a lantern; G, a corner, formed by soldering a piece-of tin, bent to form an angle, to a rod,
designed to be removed when it is desired to To use my improved lantern, should it be desired to remove a light of glass for the purpose of cleaning or other purpose, or to repair breakage, raise the catch D and remove the corner (3, when a light can be easily removed or replaced. After being replaced, place the corner 0 back, securing by the eye E and catch D.
I have been informed that it is not new to construct street-lamps with a movable corner, and I make no claim thereto; but- I am not aware that previous to my said invention lanterns have been constructed as herein described.
I claim as my invention-- The combination of the frame A, the-spring D, the eye E, the corner (J, and the flange F F, in a manner and for the purpose substantially as herein described and set forth.
