Description

June 3, 1930. G. H. VAN ARNAM FOLDING FOOT REST FOR TOILET SEATS Filed Dec. 17, 1927 Patented June 3, 1930 GEORGE H. van or; roar Parr FHCE WAYNE; INDIANA, assrenoa TO JU ENILE woon PRODUCTS, moi, A coa ronarron or INDIANA "roma ne-room REST ron 'rornn r snars This invention relates to improvements in folding foot-rests for toilet seats, and the object thereof is to provide an adjustable and foldable foot-rest on an infants toilet seat, especially, such as is ordinarily super imposed upon the customary seat for adults.
Another object is to construct the folding foot-rest structure and the means of its attachment to the seat so that accidental in jury of the occupant by becoming caught in the fastening device for the foot-rest will be averted. And, a further object is to provide a folding foot-rest for an infants toilet seat that will be firmly held and sustained in extended position by the fastening means with which it is attached to the seat. These objects are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. l is a side elevation of an infants folding toilet seat to which is applied a folding foot-rest embodying the invention, the chair and foot-rest being shown in position for use; 7
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan ;view projected from Fig. 1; a
Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the formation of the end of a side-arm for the footrest; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of an anchor clip for holding the side-arm in extended position.
The characters appearing in the description refer to parts shown in the drawings and designated thereon by corresponding characters.
The invention consists of a foot board 1 having at each end a fixed bracket 2, which bracket is adjustably secured to a corresponding side arm 3, said side arm having a series of spaced perforations 4 therein, there being a stud 5 bracket, which stud and bolt extend through a corresponding pair of said perforations, whereby the bracket is held from tilting relative to thearm. A thumb-nut 7 on the and bolt 6 fixed on theelongated slot Swith an upwardlyextending V notch -9 adjacent the forward end of said slot, and has aiso' formed at its rear end a hook 10 that extends away from said end along the upper edge of said arm.
The arm 3 is secured to the corresponding side of the seat board 12, there being a chafing-plate 13 interposed between the arm 3 and the seat board, and also a Washer 14 is interposed between the head of the screw and the outer face of the arm. Said screw extends through the slot 8 and is engageable in the notch 9.
An anchor clip 15, having inturned jaws 16 and 17 at its forward end is secured to theside of the seat board 11 so that the rear end of the arm 3. projects between said jaws, and the hook jaw 16 when the screw 12 is engaged in the notch 9. I The lowermost jaw 17 extends beneath the seat board so that upward swing- 11 by means of a screw 111g movement of the anchor clip is prevented.
on-the anchor, and to permit forward sliding movement of the arm 3 on said screw sufficiently to effect withdrawal of the end of the arm from betweenthe jaws of the anchor clip. When the arm 3 bears upon the screw 12 with the'screw extending in the notch 9, either forward or backward sliding movement of the arm and the disconnection of the end of the arm from the anchor clip are prevented. Also, when the hooked end of the arm is in engaging position in the anchor clip, the screw 12 forms a fulcrum support for the arm 3, whereby downward swinging movement of the arm isprevented, and thus, said arm and the foot-board in connection therewith are so Q lot
clothing between the hook and jaw, are circumvented.
Fig. 2 of the drawings shows a portion only of the seat board and foot-board, one side of the seat-board and corresponding portion of the foot-board together with the supporting means therefor being omitted as not essential to the disclosure. However, the parts omitted constitute the exact counterparts of those shown in the view.
In utilizing the invention, the arms 3 are adjusted upon their fulcrum supports so that connection is made between their hooked rear ends and the corresponding anchor clips, as indicated in Fig. 1, and the brackets 2 are adj ustably secured in place at the outer ends of the arms so that the foot-board will be held in a position properly spaced from the seat-board according to the length of the legs of the occupant. The seat is then positioned in the usual manner upon a regular water closet seat (not shown) in readiness for use.
hen it is desired to fold the foot-rest to admit of storing the seat in a small space, the foot-rest is raised by swinging the arms 3 upwardly to effect disengagement of the fulcrum screws from the notches 9. Then, by backward sliding movement of the arms the hooks 10 are disengaged from the corresponding jaws 16, which disengagement admits of further upward swinging movement of the foot-rest and forward sliding movement of said arms by which the hooked ends are withdrawn completely away from the anchor clips, whereupon the foot-rest maybe swung into folded position beneath the seatboard, as indicated in dotted outline in Fig. 1.
Each arm 3 has made therein an outwardly extending offset 3 so that clearance is thereby afforded between said arms and the corresponding clips when said arms are in folded position.
What I claim is 1. In combination with a toilet seat, a member constituting a foot-rest; a bracket on each end of said rest, each bracket having a stud and bolt spaced apart; an arm in connection with each of said brackets, said arm having perforations therein spaced apart, into which said stud and bolt of the corresponding bracket extend; a fulcrum bolt disposed in each side of said seat, each arm having in its rear end an elongated slot and notch adjacent to and spaced from the forward end thereof, and having also a hook; and an anchor clip on each side of said seat having a jaw engageable with the hook of the corresponding arm, the fulcrum bolt having engagement in the notch in the corresponding arm when the hook of said arm is engaged with said jaw.
2. In combination with a toilet seat, a member constituting a foot-rest; a fulcrum In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
