IMPROVEMENT m COPY-HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,088, dated April 11, 1876; application filed March 29, 1876.

'To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANNA B. STAPLER, of Wilmington, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Copy-Holders, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The object of my invention is to provide a convenient apparatus for holding letters, ofiicial, legal, and other manuscripts or papers, directly in front of the eyes of the person copying the same, and at the same time, by a suit able guide or line-indicator, to enable the copyist to readily and without loss of time see the portion of the paper next to be copied. This apparatus is adapted to the use of copyists with the pen, and of compositors or typesetters.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a front view of an apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line on as of Fig. 1.

In the drawings similar'letters represent similar parts.

A is a quadrangular frame, with a middle cross-piece parallel with the sides thereof. To this cross-piece a is hinged a standard or support, b, the lower end of which is secured by a cord to the lower part of the frame, as in other easels, orin step-ladders, to keep the support from swinging back too far. B is a doublyslotted projection of the said frame. 0 is an adjustable cross-bar or line-indicator, the ends of which pass through, and slide in, the slots 0. D is a knob, on which is a screw passing through a hole in the end of the line-indicator, and which knob, when turned, acts as a set-screw to fix the same in position. E is a channel or groove, open at the top, intended for the reception of the edge of the paper which is to be copied. F is a slot or device, through which the paper may be passed when turned. over, so that it may not bend over to the front and be in the way.

The mode of operation of my apparatus, from its simplicity, may readily be understood. When in use the easel is set upon a desk or table at the angle most convenient for the copyist. The sheet of paper or other matter to be copied is then inserted in the channels E, resting upon the bottoms thereof, or if the paper be not wide enough to extend from channel to channel, it may lean against the crosspiece a, or, if the copyist choose, it may be held at the upper part of the frame by being turned over,'and the upper edge inserted in the slot F. The cross-bar or line-indicator 0 being then released from the pressure of the screws on the end of each knob D, it is slid to the height required, and there held by the knobs being turned so as to operate the screws. As the copying advances the line-indicator is slid downward in an instant of time, the pressure of the set-screws having been previously properly adjusted. Instead of set-screws, springs may be used for the same purpose. This must be obvious at a glance.

My above-described apparatus may be made of wood, of metal, of both combined, of papiermache, or of other suitable materials.

What 1 claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A copying apparatus, having the frame A, the projections B with slots 0, the marker or line-indicator G sliding in the slots 0, and the channels E, operating as described.

2. In a copying-easel, the combination of the frame A, the doubly-slotted projections B, the line-indicator G, and the knobs or set-screws D. operating substantially as described.
