Description

May 27, 1930;
V G. W. M]LLER SUN AND RAIN SH IELD Filed Sept. 1, 1.927
11v VENTOR Patented May 27, 1930 UNITED STATES GEORGE W. MILLER, F WICHITA, KANSAS sun AND RAIN snrnnn Application filed September My invention relates to a protecting device or shield for the purpose of shielding the occupants from sun or rain by being placed at the top of the auto window, inside of the auto so as to be extended outward and downward as desired.
The object of my invention is to provide a sun and rain shield that will not detract from the appearance of the automobile, and
in beauty and appearance is in keeping with the rest of the auto.
Another object of my invention is to pro vide a sun and rain shield in permanent housing on the inside of the window of the auto when in an inactive position.
Another object of my invention is to provide a sun and rain shield which can be extended in active position with one hand while driving.
Another object of. my invention is to provide a sun and rain shield that automatically locks and stays in position without any ad justments.
With the above and other objects in view my invention further includes the following novel features and detail of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an isometric view of an opening with invention installed therein.
Figure 2 is a detailed side view of the supporting ratchet, etc.
Figure 3 is an edge view of Figure 2.
Figure A is a detailed view of ratchet wheel.
Figure 5 is a detailed view of ratchet cover.
At 1 is shown the jam of the opening on which the bracket 2 is mounted and held in position thereon by means of screws which.
are passed through the openings 6 and 7 and screwed into the jam 1, and between the bracket 2 and 2 is placed a spring actuc ted roller 4 on which is mounted the curtain 3. On the lower end of the bracket is a ratchet of whichS) is the ratchet wheel firmly secured to bracket 2. 5 is a ratchet arm with lug on circuit end to engage teeth of the ratchet m wheel to hold shield in three determined po frame in a. position of adjustment.
1,1927. Serial No. 216,987.
sitions. Arm 5 rotates on the ratchet wheel 9. Enough space is allowed to give lug clear ance so as to pass over ratchet teeth. The spring in the shield roller urges the lug into the ratchet teeth, the other end of the arm has a triangular turn and engages in the end of the curtain rod 10. 8 is a covering of the ratchet wheel. 11 is a screw to holdthe covering on. 10 is the curtain rod attached to the free end of curtain. 3, being hollow the ratchet arm 5 enters and is securely held.
The operation of this apparatus is as follows By taking hold ofthe rodlO and pushing outward and downward to any of the positions determined by the ratchet wheel on the member 9, ravity and the spring actuated curtain roller l will cause. a lug on the ratchet arm to engage the ratchet teeth in member 9, thereby holding shield in active positions.
Such modifications may be made as lie within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A sun and rainshield including a frame having side members, one side member having its end extended forwardly and spaced from the side member to define an elongated space, abracket associated with one side memberof the frame, a pin extending from said bracket and disposed in the space of the side member associated therewith to adjustably support the frame, and means for holding the 2. A sun and rain shield including an adjustable frame, said frame having side mem bers, one of the side members having a portion of its length adjacent to its end, bent upon itself defining a. slot, a tooth extending laterally from the extremity of said side member, a bracket having pins extended into the slots to pivotally support the frame, said bracket having a tooth formed on its edge to be engaged by the teeth of the frame to adjustably support the frame.
3. A sun and rain shield including an adjustable frame having side members, one of the side members having a portion of its length adjacent to its end, bent upon itself defining a slot, a tooth extending laterally from the extremity of said side member, said side members operatively connected by a tube cross member for Width adjustment.
4. A sun and rain shield including an adjustable frame having a pair of side members, each of the side members having a portion of its length adjacent to its end, bent upon itself defining a slot, a tooth extending laterally from the extremity of said side members, said side members operatively connected by a tube cross member for Width adjustment.
5. A sun and rain shield including an adustable frame, said frame having side memers, one of the side members having a portion of its length adjacent to its end, bent upon itself defining a slot, a tooth extending laterally from the extremity of said side members, a bracket having a tooth formed on its edge to be engaged by the teeth of frame, said bracket having pins extending into the slots to pivotally support and position frame to be urged to engage the tooth of the bracket by the tension of the spring actuated shade connected to frame.
6. A sun and rain shield including an adjustable frame, said frame having a pair of side members, each of the side members having a portion of its length adjacent to its end bent upon itself defining a slot, a tooth ex tending laterally from the extremity of said side members, a pair of brackets, each having teeth formed on its edge to be engaged by the teeth of the frame, said pair of brackets each having pins extended into the slots to pivotally support and position said frame to be urged into engagement by the tension of the spring actuated shade connected to frame.
7. A sun and rain'shield including an adjustable frame, said frame having a pair of side members, each of the said side members having a portion of its length adjacent to its end bent upon itself defining a slot, a tooth extending laterally from the extremity of said side members, a pair of brackets each having teeth formed on its edge to be engaged by the teeth of the frame, a spring actuated shade operatively connected to the upper end of said brackets and connected to the frame, said brackets having pins extended to the frame to be urged into engagement by the tension of the spring actuated shade. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature. GEORGE W. MILLER.
