l sPooL 0R REEL Filed May 14, 1928 Patented May 13, 1930 UNITED STATES EVERETT H. KNEEN, OF ANSN'IA, CONNECTICUT SPOOL OR REEL Application filed May 14, 1928. Serial No. 277,473.
This invention relates to improvement in spools or reels particularly adapted for adheslve tape. kStrips of' adhesive tape are Wound upon a plurality of tubular cores mounted upon a suitable mandrel, then the cores, with the coils of tape, are separated and ends are applied to the core, andthe object of this invention is a simple construction which provides a core of suflicient rigidity and toA Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a side view of the core detached; Fig. 6 is an end View thereof;
Fig. 7 is a side view of an eyeletdetached;
Fig. 8 is an inside view of the same; Fig. 9 is va sectional view illustrating a modiiied form of myinvention;
Fig. 10 is a sectional view showing another modified form of my invention; Fig. 11 is an edge view of the same; and Fig. 12 is an inside view of the same. In carrying out my invention, I employ a core 15 formed from a strip of sheet-metal and rolled to form a tube, the ends 16 being turned in to form shoulders 17 To connect the edges of the core, I form one-end of the strip with parallel slots 18 and raise the metal between the slots to form bridges 19. lThe other end of the strip is formed with tongues 20 which pass through the slots 18, below the bridges 19, and pressure is then applied to clamp the tongues by the bridges. In this way the tongues are bent transversely so as to be y firmly interlocked. With the cores thus formed, I employ end-plates 21 perforated for the reception of eyelets 22, the necks 23 of which are struck outward to form fingers 24 arranged to engage with the shoulders 17, so as to be rmly interlocked with the core.
It is obvious that instead of forming the Fig. 1 is a front view of a reel or spool conl tending through said plates and formedwith eyelets independently of the end-plates 21, they may be Vformed integral therewith, as shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings, in which the plate 21 is formed with a centrally-arranged inwardly-extending neck 28 provided 55 with fingers 29 to engage with the shoulders 17, or, instead of forming a neck, the plate 27 may be formed with a series of inwardly-projecting fingers 30 provided with projections 31 to engage with the shoulders 17. With this'construction I provide a tube or core sufficiently rigid for the purpose and provided with shoulders with which thelend-pieccs are irrnly interlocked.
I claim: 1. A spool, comprising a core formed from astrip of metal rolled to form a tube, the abutting edges interlocked and its endsturned inward forming annular shoulders and endpieces provided with fingers engaging with the said shoulders, whereby the end-pieces are interlocked with the core.
2. A spool, comprising a core formed from a strip of metal rolled to forma tube, one edge of the strip formed withl parallel slots form-l ing bridges and the other edge formed with tongues extending beneath said bridges, the ends of the core turned inward, whereby annular shoulders are formed and end-plates provided with fingers engaging with said 3. A spool, comprising a core formed from a strip of metal rolled to form a tube, one edge of the strip formed with parallel slots forming bridges and the other edge formed'with tongues extending beneath said bridges, the ends of the core turned inward, whereby annular shoulders are formed, end-plates applied to the ends of the core and eyelets ex- 9o' ingrs engaging with said shoulders.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification. f
` EVERETT H. KNEEN.
