Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,578, dated June 16, 1857.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN W. Lnrrnn'rs, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Portable Foot-Stove; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, said drawing being a vertical section of my improvement, the plane of section passing through the center.

My invention consists in the employment or use of a lamp having an annular chamber or reservoir which contains the burning fluid, said lamp being used in connection with a perforated or reticulated plate and a division plate, the above parts being fitted within a suitable case or box and arranged as will be hereinafter fully shown and described whereby a convenient portable and economical foot stove is obtained and one that may be used with perfect safety, it be ing impossible for the garments to be casu ally ignited from it.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.

A represents a rectangular case or box which may be constructed of wood and of any proper form, square and circular would probably be the forms most generally used. The case A has a sheet metal box B placed or fitted within it. The box B may correspond in form with the case A or not-as desired and it may be fitted snugly within it but not so much so as to prevent its being withdrawn and placed or fitted readily within the case A.

The top of the box B does not extend quite as high as the case A and the top of the case has metal bars (a) upon it, or an ornamental cast metal fret work plate may be used.

The bottom of the box B has a cylindrical chamber or projection C at its center. This chamber C passes through the bottom of the case A, and receives a lamp D which is of annular form, a passage Z) being through its center. The lamp is provided with the usual wick tubes (0), and is designed more especially for burning alcohol.

Within the box B and just above the tubes (0) a perforated or reticulated plate ((Z) is placed. This plate (its under surface) is of concave form. Just above the plate (d) a fiat plate (e) is placed. This plate has segments cut from it so that communications between the upper and lower parts of the box B will be obtained. To the upper part of the box B a smoke or draft pipe (g) is attached, said pipe communicates with the side of the box B. The lamp D may be secured within the chamber C in any proper manner.

The flame of the lamp will be supplied with air through the passage (1)) at the center of the lamp D. The perforated or reticulated plate (d) serves to distribute or spread the heat and as the draft passes through the opening into the upper part of the box B it follows of course that the top plate (h) of the box will be evenly heated. The lamp D may be made sufficiently large so that it will hold fluid enough to last a long time.

The case A may be provided with feet or legs (not represented) to keep the bottom of the chamber C off the floor or ground.

This invention is extremely simple, it is far superior to the usual foot warmers when coals are employed. The invention when applied to carriages may form a permanent fixture at the bottom, the body of the car riage being constructed with the stove or warmer permanently attached and extending the whole width of the vehicle. hen intended as a portable affair to be carried from place to place it may be provided with a handle and ornamented in any way that may be considered desirable.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

The lamp D fitted or placed within the cylindrical chamber C of the box B; the lamp being constructed in annular form so as to have a passage (6) through its center to feed the flame with air, and the box B fitted within the case A; the box B being provided with the perforated or reticulated plate (cl), plate (0) with passages (f) and draft pipe (9) the whole being arranged substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
