Description

A ril 29, 1930. I. A] KARNS 1,756,364
ATTACHMENT FOR WELL DRILLING RIGS Filed Ma 14, 1927 abbommq Patented Apr, 1930 ID- TAT IRAQ. xAnNs, OF'WICHITA rants, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR TO HERBERT J. HAUSLER y ATTACHMENT FOB WELL-DRILLING RIGS v Application filed May 14, 1927,. SeriaINo. 191,350.
,Myinvention consists in new and useful I improvements in apparatus for use in raising and lowering the bailer, sand pump or swabbing' device in well drilling, and is i adapted to be used'in connection with a rotary or standard drilling rig.
:Heretofore, when 'it has been desired to bail or swab a'well, it wasne'cess'ary to'unreel the drill line f rom the drum on which it runs, and reel on a swab or bailing line, an 1 operation which not only causes a great loss of time, but involves considerable expense.
A further disadvantage experienced in this procedure has been that after a line is once wound on the spool or drum, it has a tendency to become set, and when it is continuously un- .wound and rewound, itdoes not go back as it should, which results in a chafingand wear on the liner j I It is the obj ect of my invention to overcome these disadvantages and to this end I provide an auxiliary drum driven by the main source of, power whichoperates the draw works of the derrick, and adapted to have the bailer or swab line reeled thereon, whereby it is un necessary to alternately reel and unreel the drill line and said bailer or swab line on the main drum. It is obvious that with this arrangement, considerable time'and money are i *3 saved in the drilling of a well.
With the above and other objects'in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention consists in the novel features herein set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
' Referring to the drawings in which numerals oflike characterdesignate similar parts in both views, r
, Fig. 1 is a side elevation showing the device applied to a derrick, and z 1 Fig. 2 is a view at right angle to Fig. 1.
In the drawings, l'designates the floor of a;rotary rig, having the usual jack posts 2 secured thereto, and extending upwardly therefrom, connected together attheir upper extremities by the head board Rotatably mounted on the jack posts 2 in bearings s4, is the line shaft 5 having secured thereon a sprocket wheel for drivingithe conventional drum or hoist 6 supporting the drill line, all of which structure is in common use on rotary rigs. x Y
In accordance with myinventio'n, I secure.
an'additional sprocket wheel 7 onthe line shaft 5, adapted to be driven thereby, and operatively. connected by means of a chain or belt 8" with an auxiliary'drum 9 rotatably mounted'on" a shaft 9% in bearings 10 at the lower end of'a frame 11. This frame 11 consists of two or moreupwardlyextending supports Hand 13, constructed of wood or iron or both, angularly, disposed with-respect 'to V the Jack posts 2, and secured attheir lower extremiti'es'to a beam 14 through the medium of braces'15 which extend outwardlyfrom an additional sill 16 on the derrick floor 1. The
operative engagement with the sprocket 7 and line shaft 5."
22 represents the bailer or swab line which is reeled on the auxiliary drum 9, and extends upwardly therefrom, over and under the' idlers. 23 and 24-, respectively, which'a re rotatably mounted'on shafts 25 and 26, secured. on opposite-sides of the supports 12 and'13. From the idler 24',the line 22 extends upwardly on the inside of the derrick to the top thereof, from whence it is brought over the sheave wheels or other pulleys (not shown) arrangedffor the purpose, and down on the inside of the derrick. V
Withmy invention, it will be seen that when itis desired to bail or swab or-go into the hole for any purpose with tools or fishing devices, all that is necessary to do is to expend a few minutes time in attaching the bailer or swab or other tool and lowering them into the hole. When it is desired to re-continue drilling these may be withdrawn and the drilling machinery put into the hole imanecliately. Obviously, a great deal of time is saved and, as stated, the life of the drill lines and the life of the swabbing or bailing lines is prolonged. The machine which, in itself comprises an auxiliary unit, is set back out of the way so as not to interfere with any of the present equipment used in connection with a rotary rig, and its attachment involves no great amount of work, and its removal from place to place requires but little effort.
From the foregoing it is believed that my invention may be clearly understood without further description, it being borne in mind that numerous changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention as set out in the appended claims. Y WhatI claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a well drilling rig employing conventional draw works having a line shaft, of an auxiliary unit comprising a drum for raising and lowering the swabbing or. bailing devices in a well, said drum being rotatably mounted in an auxiliary frame, means for securing said frame to said rig just .off the floor thereof and independent thereof,
adapted to have a swabbing or bailing line reeled thereon, an additional sprocket wheel mounted on the line shaft and opera-l tively connected with said drum whereby said drum is driven by said line shaft, a plurality of idler wheels on said frame for engaging said swabbing or bailing line, a clutch memand means whereby said drum is driven from the line shaft of the rig.
2. The combination with a well'drilling rig employing conventional draw works having a line shaft, of an additional sprocket wheel mounted on the line shaft, an aux1hary unit comprising a frame, means for securing said frame to the rig adjacent the line shaft and the holst and just off the floor of said rig, an
auxiliary drum rotatably mounted on said frame and means whereby said drum is driven by said sprocket on the line shaft to raise and lower the bailing or swabbing devices.
3; An attachment for well drilling rigs employ ng conventional draw works having a line shaft, consisting of an auxiliary unit,
comprising a frame, means for securing said frame to the rig just 01% the floor thereof, a drum rotatably mounted in said frame, means for operatively connecting said drum with the line shaft, said drum being adaptedoto have a 'swabbing or bailing line reeled thereon, and a plurality of idler wheels mounted on said frame for engaging said line.
4. The combination with a well drilling rig employing conventional draw works having jack posts and a line shaft, of a frame, means for securing said frame to the rig just off the floor thereof, and at an angle to the ack posts, bracing means for said frame, an auxiliary drum rotatably mounted in said frame and
