My vinvention relates-to extensible closures and, more particularly, to such devices when applied to window screens. ,Y f
The present invention is an improvement 5 on the device shown in my U. S.' Patent No.
1,610,036, issuedfDec. 7, 1926, for window screen. One ofthe objects of this improvement is to make the aforesaid device adjustable to diiferent size windows or wall open-` ings in general. Another object is to pro-` duce knock down units which may be readily taken apart and as readily assembled, so-
that the unit can be shipped or transported y 'in a compact form, and the several elements forming it separately supplied or replaced.'
A third object is to eliminate the danger attending the usual procedure of fastening suspension means for a screen to the outer surface of the wallvof a building, sometimes, at a great height from the ground, by providing a complete unit comprising both the screen andthe suspension means' therefor through operations performed entirely on the inside of the building when setting up the unit in its place. Other objects will become apparent from the detailed description of my invention which follows. A Y
Inthe drawings, Figure 1 is a front view n Aof one embodiment of my invention. *Fig-y ure 2 is a side view thereof when the sectional screen forming a part of my device is raised.
Figure 3Yis a cross section of the device shown .l in-Figure 1, taken along the line 3 3.V Figl ure 4 is an enlarged detail of the outer frame ofthe device illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, looking in the direction of the arrow 4 atl the bottom of Figure 2. lFigure 5 is across section taken` along the line ,5 5 of Figure 4. FiguresG and 7 are, respectively, a front and a side view of a catch used in connection with my device. Figure 8 is a detail showing how the sectional screen is held in a, raised position. Figure 9Ais an enlargedicorner of j such a sectional screen. FigurerlO is an enlarged cross section along the line 1010fof Figure 9.
'Referring j extensible frame composed r'of the top stile' Y 1,'bottom stile 2,and side stiles V3, and the corner members 4 telescoping with the stiles tothe figures in detail, is an 1, 2,r 3. 0n the frame F is mounted a frame 7" made up' of two sections, each section com prising longitudinal stilesf' and transversal stiles '6, and corner, members 7 telescop'ing y with thevstiles 5,6. The stiles 5 and 6 arer members 7 and 7 of U shaped cross-section,
invertedly superimposed, as clearly shown in Figure 10. `A mesh 8 isstretched across each one of the sections of the frame f, is bent at its periphery and'jammed in between adjacent vShanks of the members 5 and 5 (or 6 "and 6) alongthat part of the stiles which is not telescoped into `a corner 7, and be-l tween adjacent shanks of members 5". and ',7
(or 6 andv 7') along such'a corner 7. Thel mesh 8 issecured to the frame 7 not'so much by the pressure of the adjoining Shanks of the U shaped members as by the pressure of the edges ofthe shanksfof `5 (or 6') on the bottom of the members 5 (or 6), the ends' 9of the mesh 8 extendinginto .the hollow,
interior ofthe Stiles, as shown in Figure 10. The amountofv telescoping between a stile 5 (or 6) and' a' corner member is adjustable, as by means of va slot 10 in the member 7" and a short bolt l1 passing through the member 5 (or The member 5 ,(or 6.) is'adjustablysecured tothe member 7 in a similar manner by aslot inthe member 7 and a short bolt 12 passing through the member 5 (or 6). y
' vThe stiles of the frame F are made up of sheet metal shaped to conform with the outline of thewall opening. As shown in Figure 3, thel side stiles 3 are spaced to abut on lthe outside casing (for a frame building) 'or reveal (fora stone or brick building) 13, and
vio
they have a smaller cross section near the win-V dow side, to make room for the outside window stop 16. The recess in the stile to allow for the outside window stop is ,made sufh- Vciently large to provide for all cases and,
accordingly, there may be an open space between this portion of the stile and the window stop, but this is of no consequence, since the remaining portion of the stile is made to lit closely to the reveal or casing 13. Thestiles 3 are secured to the outside-stops 116, as V,by
. means of screws 17, which pass through the ing; A second bend upon itself of this sheet y reduced portions, 14, ofthe stilesz.V Only.:
one window,15, is shown, of the pair which make up a complete sashV window. rilie corner members 4 are shaped to correspond to the form of the Stiles and are adjustablyseciired thereto in a manner similar torthat of frame At 18, the stiles 3 yare shaped to V.form grooved guides for the pins 19 which extend laterally from the corner members 7, with.V st ops20` therefor at dierent heights inthe flange 21. The flange 21 is formed by bending the metal sheet, of which the stile is made, upon itself, asshown in the draw- -is shown at 22, forming an inclined Harige i sects may pass the screen.
thereof, but I prefer to make similar flanges Y form of linkage is claimed in the present in-` which'rests .on the stiles of the frame fand Vcovers up the openings or cracks between the 23 on the corner members 4, into which the flanges 22 may telescope in unison with the telescoping of the other portions of the stiles.
The twov sections of the frame f are linked together for angular motion relatively to one anothery and to the frame F. No especial vention, a pivotal connection 24 being shown in'Fi'gure 2. At its upper end, the'frame issuspended from the frame F, as by means ofa hook 25, and an eye 26. When the screen is in closed position, itis locked by means of a'catch 27 `revolu'ble on a pivot 28. The centerof 'gravity of the catch27 is below the p'oiiit 28, when in the position shown in Figures 6 and 7, so that, when released, it automatically assumes this position, at which time the boss 30 engages the stile 5 and holds the catch in proper alignment. When the catch is operative to lock the screen, the inclined arm 29 frictionally engages the ange 22 of the frame F. The catch is manipulated by taking hold ofthe boss or handle 31 which projects at a right angle `from the main body thereof. Y j
The manner of installing such a 'screen as herein described, received in"lrnocl ed down condition, will now be briefly explained.
First, the outer frame F is assembled, the corv corner memberv ner members 4 being secured to the telescoping stiles l, 2, 3, after the frame has been extended to the desired size. tion of the screen is assembled as follows. The members 5 and 6 of the stiles 5 and 6 are telescoped into the corner members 7 to make up suoli lengths for the four sides of the frame f as would make the frame f lit into the opening of the frame F,.whereupon the members 5 and 6 are secured to the 7 inthe manner described hereinbefore. A mesh 8, exceeding the area of the section "of the frame f, is placed over the section in a stretched condition, and is bent over the edges of the members 5 and 6 and over the adjoining edges of and 7 and 6 and 7, at the corners, the bent por-v tions of the mesh being somewhat greater than the depth of the Us. Then the members 5 and 6 are telescoped into the corner members 7 to the right'lengtlis andsecured to one another, thus formingan inner frame-f work which may be inserted into the framework of the members 5, 6 and 7.
outer one, the bent portions of the mesh 8 are jammed in between the adjoining shanks of the members 7 and 5 and of the members 7 and 6, at thelcorners, and between the' members 5 and 5 and the members 6 and 6, beyond the corners, and are firmly held by the pressure of the edges of the shanks of 5 and 6 on the bottom of the members 5 and 6, beyond the corners, and, at the cor-V ners,'by the pressure of the adjoining edges of the members 5', 7 and 6, 7, on the bottom,k
of the members V5 and 6. This secures the mesh and the two sections of the screen are completed and ready to be linked to-` stiles 3 to the window stops 16, as` above ex' plained. l
When standard sizes of window openings are available, or when standard sizes of screens are desired, I may omit the telescoping feature from one or the other, or from both of my frames. rIhe unit would in such a case ,be made to size and its installation in place proceeded with in the same manner as inthe case of the extensible units. j
I claim:
1. Locking means between two frames, one,
of said frames having a projecting flange resting on the second frame, comprising a catch pivoted above its center of gravity Vin said second frame and provided with an arm adapted to frictionally. engage said iange when saidcatch is in operative position and Next, each sec-V When this inner framework is inserted into the vwith a boss shaped to engage the edge of said V said'metal sheet bent upon itself to form av ange extending from one side of said groovev and provided with stops for said pins, and
` said metal sheet further bent uponritself to of gravity on one of the stiles ofl said clol form a second longitudinaly flange projecting :from said main hollow member at an angle thereto and resting on said closure.
3. ln a structure such as is described in claim 2, means for locking the closure mentioned in said claim to the window frame, comprising a catch pivoted abovev its center sure and provided'with an arm adapted to frictionally engage` one of the longitudinal l *flanges projecting from said window frame and resting on said closure when said catch 1s 1n operatlve positlon, and with a boss shaped to engage the inner edge of the aforesaid stile when theV catch is released, and
means for manipulating said catch.
4. A screen comprising a metal AJframe havl ing longitudinal and transversal stiles and corner members telescoplng therewith, each stile and each corner member being composed 3* of invertedly superimposed,` frictionally held, stiff channel members, each oneof said channel members comprising a base and two sides bounded by plane parallelv surfaces perpendicular to said base, means for adjustably seycuring said stiles and said corner members to one another, and a mesh across said frame bent along its periphery and jammed in between the superimposed members of said stiles and said corner members.
