THERRIEN MACHINE DESIGNED FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF FLASHINGS Filed Aug. 2, 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Affcn ME Patented Apr. 15, 1930 UNITED STATES ADELARD J. THERRIE-N, F LYNNFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS MACHINE DESIGNED FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF FLASHINGS Application filed August 2, 1928. Serial No 296,898.
My invention relates to machines designed for the manufacture of flashings such as are used in the building trades over and above door casings, window casings and elsewhere 6 in construction work to prevent leakage.
It has for its purposes to minimize costs by quantity production and material saving; to provide manufacturing means for the mechanical output of a new and novel flashing for use in the building trades; to make possible a perfected and uniform commercial flashing product; to produce in one continuous bending and cutting operation a perfected flashing; to provide automatic means for feeding the material into the machine, automatic means for expelling it therefrom as a finished product and to provide the various other advantages and results made evident from thefollowing specification.
l I accomplish the objects of my invention as shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 shows an end view of my improved machine with the dies, cutting and forming members in open position, separate and apart. Figure 2 shows the detail of the die members in open position with the flashing material fed therebetween ready for the manufacturing operation. Figure 3 shows the detail of the die members in a partially 80 closed and cutting position at which the cutting edge of the upper die severs the neces sary flashing material from the supply roll. Figure 4 shows the die members in their fully closed position at which the flashings are fully formed. Figure 5 shows the die members in open position with the finished flashing being ejected from therebetween. Figure 6 shows the driving detail of the feeding mechanism at the finish of the down 4 stroke of its driving arm. Figure 7 shows the driving detail of the feeding mechanism at the start of the down stroke of its driving arm. Figure 8 shows the detail of ejecting mechanism.
Referring again to the figures A shows the machine frame, B shows the pulley to which operating power is applied. C shows the upper die. D shows the lower die. E shows the feeding plane over which the flashing material passes from the feed rolls F and Gr to a position between the dies C and D. G shows the lower roll which transmits opera ating power to the feed roll F, through the gears F and G. H shows the driving arm of the feeding mechanism working on the fulcrum H I shows the loose connection hinge comprising a pin operating in the slot of the arm C designed to provide the lost motion required to care for the timing on the feed roll and to delay the working of the feed until the dies C and D are sufficiently distanced for the material to feed therebetween. H shows the teeth on the driving arm, adaptable to interlock with the teeth G on the loose pinion G. J shows a pawl adapt able to insure the roll G turning in one direction only. K shows an extension arm on the loose pinion G on the end of which arm is the pawl K adaptable in one direction to slip over and in the other to engage the teeth Gr on the ratchet wheel G. L shows the compression spring adaptable to hold the roll F against the metal M to assure proper feeding. N shows the flashing in process of and after being shaped. C shows the connecting rod from the upper die C to the driving arm I-I so as to give motion to the feeding mechanism when the upper die is raised and lowered. 0 shows the ejection pin extending through the lower die D in its open position and withdrawn (see Figure 4 as the dies are closed by action of a link P connected at its upper end to the upper die and at its lower end by a lost motion pin and slot connection P with a lever Q fixed to a shaft S which shaft also has fixed thereto a lever It ha ing pin and slot lost motion connection 0 with the pin 0. The loose pin and slot connections P and 0 supply the required lost motion and, as the dies C and D open, allow the pin 0 to hold its position of rest until the dies are sufficiently distanced to make room for the projection of the pin 0 from the lower die.
In operation from open position of the dies (see Figure 2) the flashing material then being in position therebetween, the upper die moves downward (see Figure 3) severs the material at M and closes to the position shown in Figure 4, the ejecting pin 0 mean- While receding to the position shown in Figure 4. As the upper die C rises the pin 0 projects to the position shown in Figure 5 and with the assistance of the incoming material M ejects the finished flashing from the machine.
Throughout the detail description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
While I have illustrated and described a preferred construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation or modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction herein set forth but desire to avail myself of such variations and modilications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America 1. In a machine for the production of flashings, and other products, in combination an upper and lower die, said upper die having a cutting edge adaptable to sever at required distances the flashing material asit is fed thereunder, means for raising and lowering the upper die to the end that said dies alternately assume open and closed positions, and means for ejecting the finished flashings after being formed between said dies, said ejecting means comprising an ejecting pin and a series of connecting rods, said pin timed by said rods to project from the surface of the lower die when the dies are in open position and to recede therefrom when the dies are in closed position.
2. In a machine for the production of flashings and other products, in combination an upper and a lower die, said upper die having a cutting edge adaptable to sever at required distances, the flashing material as it is fed thereunder, means for feeding the material between the dies, comprising a fulcrumed arm, a loose pinion, a pawl, a ratchet wheel and a roll. said arm having one end thereof loosely connected to the upper moving part of the machine and its other end carrying teeth adaptable to engage other teeth on said loose pinion, the said loose pinion having an extension arm on the end of which is the said pawl adaptable to engage teeth on the outer edge of said ratchet wheel geared to said roll which feeds the flashing material. means for raising and lowering the upper die to the end that said dies alternately assume open and closed positions and means for ejecting the finished flashings after being formed between said dies.
