UNITED STATES PATENT QFFTGE.
SAMUEL P. HAMILTON, OF DOYLE STO WN, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [75,451, dated March 28, 1876; application filed J uue 2, 1875.
To all whom it'may concern:
Be itknown that I, SAMUEL P. HAMILTON,
of Doylestown, Bucks county, Pennsylvania,
of the bed-bottom; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same.
The springs A are secured to two longitudinal strips, B B, connected to cross-strips a (L secured to the bed-frame, the two longitudi nal rows of springs being adapted to the opsite ends of the slats F. A strip, D, is hinged to each of the longitudinal strips B B at such a distance from one end of the same as may be necessary, and to each of these hinged strips D is hung a toothed segmental plate, E, to the lower end of which is connected a strap, 12, arranged to be wound .upon a shaft, (1, turning in bearings on the bed-frame, and provided with a handle, f, by which it may be operated, the hinged strips being retained in any position to which they may be adjusted by two lever-pawls, h, which are pivoted to the edges of the strips B B, and engage with the teeth of the plates E.
The springs at the end of each row are secured to the strips D, so as to form, with their slats, a hinged section of the bed-bottom, which may be raised and lowered to any desired extent upon operating the shaf d by means of its handle. v
To the short arm of each of the lever-pawls h is connected a cord or wire, 6, which extends to the end of the bed-frame, and is there provided with a suitable handle, so that the pawls can be readily lifted out of the teeth of the segmental plates when it is desired to depress the hinged section.
The slats are attached to the springs by means of bands k, of cloth, leather, or other suitable material, one end of each band being connected to the end of one of the strips B B, while the other end is connected to the end of one of the hinged strips D.
The band is passed under the uppermost coil of each spring in the row to which it is adapted, and is formed into a loop, through which one end of the'slat is inserted, the upward pressure of the spring maintaining a constant tension on the loop, and holding the slat firmly in its proper position.
It should be understood that I lay no claim to any of the above-described devices, viewed separately from each other; but
I claim as my invention The segmentalplates E, pivoted to the hinged section of the bed-bottom, and arranged to be operated by the shaft 01 and straps b, in combination with p the pawls h, adapted to the teeth of the segmental plates, and capable of being operated simultaneously by means of the cord or wire 2', all as set forth.
' In testimony whereot I have signediny name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL P. HAMILTON.
Witnesses WALLACE H. GILKYsON, JAMES GILKYSON.
